WAVES West Coast Animal Veterinary Emergency Specialty Hospital

I have shifted through many roles at the hospital and management has helped me manage many personal hurdles and issues during the most recent transition. The hospital went through a major struggle due to lack of staff, but it is changing and improving regularly. There are definitely less desirable characteristics of working in a 24/7 facility, but there are new incentives and processes that are helping. The hardest part for me was the work/life balance, but working with our counselor (big perk!) has helped me set boundaries. A benefit of working for a corporate group is larger discounts on a huge array of online services and products, plus fabulous staff discount for your pets. If you are willing to work hard but also have fun with your job and coworkers, it's a good place to start!

I have been at WAVES since 2020 and wouldn't change a thing. I have been through multiple roles, as reception, coordinator, and administration. WAVES opened up right when covid took us for a toll. Since 2023, WAVES has been revamping and we are stronger than ever. There is great team work, support, and I never want to miss a shift. WAVES has become my second home. Management has been revamping a lot of our processes to improve our structure and culture. 
I feel like I have tons of room for growth and if I have any suggestions for improvement, I am taken seriously. My voice matters.
The most enjoyable part of my job is being fast paced and something is always going on and its not repetitive. Every day is different working ER.
The hardest part of my job would be the amount of euthanasia's that happen daily. Since being an ER hospital, we tend to have a handful of euthanasia's a day, which can be very tough and hard on the heart. With that being said, we get tons of pets being discharged from our hospital which is very rewarding. It kind of balances its self out. 

Inadequate training. VERY POOR learning environment. Most staff say they are willing to help train but when it comes down to it they treat you like a nuisance if you ask for help. 
Some do help but if you dont work with those people you are screwed.
Staff frequently gossip in common work areas where others can hear. 
Bullying and gossip goes unchecked. If you complain about it, you will be fired. 
On the plus side you get 3 day weekends but are generally expected to come in on those weekends. If you dont, your work ethic will be questioned. 
Overnight hours without any inscentive. Pay is the same regardless of hours worked. 


WAVES has done an amazing job in caring for its employees over the last 6 months. Pausing the ER was a tough decision to make but it allowed the hospital and everyone in it to blossom into a beautiful environment for learning and caring for clients from start to finish. 

The people here are so amazing and constantly available to teach and help everyone reach their true potential. The ability for cross training in different departments allows you to experience and learn so much.

Waves vet is an exceptional place to take your pet if needed in an emergency just be prepared for the extreme prices which continue to go up.

The doctors that work here are absolutely amazing.
Management is a joke, and complaints go no where.

Working at an emergency vet used to be extremely rewarding at times, now working here you are on your toes constantly with the fear or getting fired for a simple mistake or miscommunication.
If you value your self worth run

Like all hospitals in North America, WAVES has overcome some hurdles with staffing. Recently the hospital has decided to focus on providing staff with a better work/life balance.

As those who work in ER/Specialty hospitals, you will know that it can be stressful and very fast-paced. However working with a supportive team has been a game changer. The team is always so helpful at teaching and the company also now has unlimited CE yearly and a dedicated counsellor, amongst other great benefits.

Some of the most amazing coworkers, but the draw back being poor management that do not treat staff well, I can not stress that part enough. Lots of burn out, and it's hard to watch your coworkers cry or burn out and leave.  The pay can be good if you're willing to work night shifts or pick up call ins, otherwise it's quite comparable or less than competitors in the area depending on your position.

Stuff that just sits around and does not do their job

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It can be very stressful. I used to be a lot better with the old management

Terrible management. No room for advancement. Patient care is sub par. Gossip and bullying is commonplace, and management is the worst for it. Unfair pay scale. Only bonus is the discount.

Everyone here at WAVES is friendly and helpful.  The team is always happy to help each other. The environment is clean, comfortable and friendly. Very fair in all aspects.
