Worked for WAHA at multiple jobsites, from up the coast to Moosonee/Moose Factory.  

Turn around and burnout are quite high.  Mental health issues are very evident not only in patients, but your coworkers as well.  There is no help if you need it, there is no mental health support. 

Wages are comparable to the rest of the province.  Management has convinced union reps that the low wages are actually for your benefit to 'pay less taxes'.  The retention and travel bonus are taxed at 50%.  Perk is you do pay less taxes for being in a Northern Zone.  Con is you spend this money on food/housing as it's easily 2/3x the price in southern ON.

When you are up the coast, management does not think you exist.  There is no oversite, no direction, things are rundown and broken chronically.  The only way to travel up the coast is via a $900 one-way airplane ride.  Vacations are not guaranteed and have been denied. There is no cell service up the coast, internet is not highspeed, not unlimited, and very expensive.

Work-life balance: 4 on 4 off, not bad except you have to stay in the communities you live in.  Mandatory OT due to chronic understaffing, some sites are staffed at 50%, with every site  not having a full complement.  You only get 3 weeks vacation as a fulltime staff.  Part time do not get vacations.

Housing: massive issue that still isn't being addressed.  If you work up the coast, you will be provided a half trailer by WAHA with rent taken from your paycheck.  If you work in Moosonee/Moose Factory, good luck finding a place to stay as there is nothing available.

Coworkers are mostly good to work with.  Management will make your life miserable.  



hat I learned was resilience—how to stay professional despite systemic inequity, toxic leadership, and discriminatory treatment. Management lacked consistency and fairness, with clear favoritism and exclusion, particularly toward non-Indigenous staff.

The workplace culture was dysfunctional. Staff dedication was undermined by poor communication, unsafe accommodations  with bad condition and lack of respect or recognition for those not part of the inner circle.Very expensive cost of living very isolated and the management lake the experience of working any where else .

The hardest part was enduring an environment where harassment, unfair workloads, and silence from leadership were normalized, No clear policies no clear process in place and their benefits are the worse compared to rest of health care, sick is not fully paid like any other organization 

The most rewarding part was the patients—helping underserved communities who deserved better systems. Unfortunately, the organization’s failure to uphold its own values made it difficult to deliver safe, equitable care.

No mental health assistance and zero understanding which is very surprising since its a hospital. Terribly toxic culture full of bullies. 

Management will not support you because they are more concerned with their jobs. They will push every employee until they break. They have zero concern about patient care. 

If you are not local you will recieve even worse medical care. Raising a family is very difficult. Good place to make plenty of OT and get experience but leave before you lose your skills.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is  There is no support from the administration, including the DOC and the union representative.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It varies significantly depending on the location. Staff turnover, working with new faces, different personalities, and varying levels of knowledge and skills, can be frustrating. Every few months, we face this challenge.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It’s frustrating to deal with the same problem repeatedly.

A Walk In Emergency Hospital in Northern Ontario where myself and other RN triage , assess and treat various types of health problems for all age groups. 
This is a First Nation Community. 
Shifts 12 hour days and night rotation. 
Required to have TRIAGE, BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC.
I care for patients with minor illnesses to major such as; chest pain, overdoses .
Alcohol withdrawal, etc
The work culture is good! We work well as a team.  When there is an emergency every nurse on duty will assist.  
New grads are welcome, they will receive 12 weeks of orientation.
I enjoy caring for the First Nation People. 



Typical day at work is busy day dealing with all kinds of patient's reason for coming to the clinic, emergency or appointment, birth to death, with each patient I a.ways learn that each person is unique and if you listen you can learn from them, and patients will cooperate better when you listen to them, management is good now, there os a good support at the workplace, hardest part of the job is when we have to wait for transportation and if the case is an emergency, 
Most enjoyable part of the job is the pay dates

i cannot in good conscious allow any more health care workers to come to this place. it is a terrible and toxic workplace filled with silo managers that know nothing of reality.

good luck finding any housing

if any other hospital is hiring with any type of bonus, even a 50 cent break open ticket, take that then work here. you will not make enough money with all their bonuses to make up for the commute.

Working at WAHA has provided me with countless experiences working with a wide variety of patients that are faced with many different illnesses. Everyday is filled with new and exciting experiences that make the day and work weeks feel like they're flying by. The rehabilitation team has been awesome and would recommend a job at WAHA to anyone looking to come up to the North. 

This company is very poorly managed, they lie to employees and to unions and WSIB for their own benefit, they say one thing and do another as experienced by myself and many other past employees. There is racial discrimination from management, they care nothing for the health and well being of the employees.
