This was the big red flag of the job....ive had people try to run after me, try to jack my car, try to follow me home. I was lucky enough to have my partner with me so we were able to get out quickly from danger (usually you work alone). If you tell management that you dont feel safe or about something that has happened to you, they just say "thats what the cops are for, you should just call them" and they brush it off. (They also took away Danger Pay for any north end routes/sketchy areas).

They force extra routes onto you and get mad if you try to say no, they constantly have people quitting on the spot especially in winter. So you think your done at 6am youll get called to pick up another route, takes you to 10am, then they know that your the only one still working so they will force you into taking another route till 12pm. All while they have a day staff, but they are so busy with all the complaints from everyone that they dont do their actual jobs (aka picking up dropped shifts).
Its so unorganized that if you call in sick, they will constantly call you leading up to delivery time asking you to pick up your own shift.
Take pictures to back yourself up....people will complain no matter what and they only believe the customers and dock your pay.
Sometimes you have to wait in line in your car until 4am when you arrived at 11pm because the truck of papers is late, now you only have till 6am to deliver.

With gas prices and what they pay for extra work you take on, it is not worth it anymore.


By far the poorest communication and support I've ever experienced in any work environment. There's absolutely no care or respect for people's time. The job listing is also very inaccurate and inconsistent - one listing (which I saw and applied for) claims each shift takes an average of 3 hours and another listing claims it only takes 2.5 hours overall. In reality, you are actually waiting longer than that just to receive the papers at the depot. Then factor in drive times, walking, weather conditions, and so on. Any reasonable, able-bodied person would not be capable of performing their duties perfectly and consistently every single shift. Expectations are high, while morale is very low. The shifts are actually misleading and definitely do not recommend to anyone who works full-time or even part-time during the day. If you cannot work your shift, you are responsible for finding a substitute. Backwards logic in my view, when it should be on the employer to find a substitute such as when people are sick or shifts are disrupting other life commitments. This job should be paid hourly including the time spent plus overtime. It's pretty criminal how this whole process is structured, which only maximizes profits over people.

A typical Winnipeg Free Press day starts with the computer where 4-5 different windows are waiting with tons of work. My job was to provide customer service and I did serve them in every possible way which includes providing support over the phone, answering their questions, put vacation stop, resend missing paper, transfer the newspaper to a different location, send today's paper tomorrow, tell them about how our promotions work, call-backs, e-mail answering, etc. We used to use different software and webpages to provide support to our customers. A very fast paced workplace with a very little time to think about something else. But there were enough break-times to enjoy the food and daily newspaper at the Free Press Cafeteria.

Management
Every so often a customer is called by "the Verifier" who's job it is to make sure the sale was correctly completed.

The hardest part of the job is facing constant rejection sometimes. (especially when I'm not feeling well) The best part of the job is the competitive wages. I personally enjoy interacting with the customers though, but that's just me.

There were some good people there. 


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There were some terrible people working there especially in upper management and HR. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
High pressure to get the work done quickly and efficiently and not to use any sick time. Extremely resistant to changes. Or even ideas for changes. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Dealing with employee complaints then dealing with HR complaints.

As a carrier, my shift is showing up and collecting my daily activity report, reporting to the depot for my papers, and then travelling to my route to deliver. All of that is pretty straight forward.

The work can be fast paced or standing around at any time or any day. The mailers are a variety of personalities ranging from cool to hotheads to abusive megalomaniacs. Upper management looks the other way when abuse is reported. The biggest issue is the absolute uncertainty of your schedule, you have to phone in to a recorded message the day before to find out if you work the next day. Some weeks you get no shifts, others they get mad at you when you don't sign up for more than 40 hours (not allowed as a part timer)

Start my day, reporting to work for 8:30 am, this was mandatory as we were worked in a unionized environment. I learned that you are only as good as your last sale. Management was very much still like the old boys club. Because of unionized mentality, I discovered I was not a good fit. The hardest part of my job was dealing with my internal clients. The most enjoyable part of my job was hitting budget every month and enjoying the incentives that went along with it.

The salary is competitive compared to some other sales jobs

Rigid and outdated ways of working.

Toxic and unsupportive environment. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very hectic managing multiple high focus accounts

A typical work day is  dull and full of stress,learning nothing at all.Management does not do anything to improved work system ,workplace culture.The hardest part of the job is management don't care for your safety.They are only for money.There is no enjoyable part of the job.
