WINNIPEG SCHOOL DIVISION

Very few 12 month positions Mainly 10 month positions with mandatory layoffs  

Advancement limited even if you have seniority as emphasis placed on standardized tests. Generally many clerical staff are now sitting in positions because even with 15 years experience in the division you now have to jump through hoops to progress.

Test are for Excel and Word have a goal is at a advanced level ...that many clerical staff in the division  do not use excel even weekly  beyond a beginner level and word limited to a few notices or memos per week ...the testing software used has a practice section but it is not available via school division and costs you money $75 usd monthly if you want to practice in advance via a third party online website and you need on a desktop computer not a MacBook or Mac and is not the same versions as currently used on the division PCs 
practice on a laptop which 70% of people now only have at home is awkward and hard on you wrists etc.
The tests are visually hard to read ie for typing test Screen type very very small  ...for the excell and word most people memorize the steps on YouTube for the excel and word tests. In the test you get no feedback and you can only answer the way the program wants it answered not any of the other ways ie right click or control keys, if you make a mistake you may be required to go back to the beginning of a section...if You realize you made a mistake you cannot back up and redo the question.

If you get below the thresholds they want you won’t get shortlisted even if you have years of seniority or years of experience that relates directly to the posting outside of the school division.  

There is Limited extra training provided for school division programs and only if they are part of your current position...don’t expect to learn skills to advance. There is seldom a over lap in your start date and the person leavings end date so no opportunity for training and sometimes your colleagues of a lesser job classification knows more than you and wad passed up for the position.  

No information about professional development beyond your job role or career development assistance.

I started 40 years ago on an emergency need as the original teachers in that program resigned before December. Therefore, my WSD interview was one to one but I’ve experienced interviews with groups of staff settings in other divisions and prefer the WSD process.  
This INDEED QUESTIONAIRE ONLY focuses on the school division in general.  Most teachers only have time to work in their position. The success & satisfaction you achieve relates to your  strong/positive/supportive communication with both staff & good administrators who promote your flexibility for mobility or change because it’s a good administration who advocate for you and a staff who will support eachother. (And I’m not saying Pandering to admin but rather that truth, honesty & diplomacy are essential) This has allowed me to initiate, and start new special programming. Advancement does not change salary, your own educational credentials establish your salary category.

Happy and contended working at WSD1 for almost 11 years

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
when the new programs they want to be implemented at once

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
positive  and the school and community has a good relationship and parents/families are helping the school program implementation


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
During school days, I enjoyed so much what I am doing where in the students are always the priorities and focus on how to assist them and discovered their potentials, capabilities and become a useful member of the community, I used my skills and expertise dealing with them and how I can extend my help on the best of my knowledge.

Generally, I would receive a call to substitute that day, sometimes in enough time to get there on time, sometimes not. Some teachers would leave a lesson plan, some wouldn't. The workplace culture of that school was usually determined by the principal. Some schools were great to work with , others, it was a struggle to get through the day. The hardest part of the job was knowing there was nothing I could do to advance to a full time position. There was no formula, procedure, time frame, nothing to help a substitute teacher become full time. It appeared to be a preferential appointment. The most enjoyable part of the job was teaching those who really wanted to learn.

I enjoyed working as a head caretaker at Winnipeg School Division.I am in my 13th years with WSD#1. There has been good times and bad times have been seeing the students grow up and come back in September with their children starting school. As a Head Caretaker i have seen school that it is becoming worse or less successful when it comes to cleaning of schools. 
The most enjoyable part of the job is good pay, great experience, amazing people and good benefits.
The hardest part of the job is wake up early, hard work. Work in both cold and Heat.
I've learned as a Head Caretaker my responsibility is to ensure the buildings are well- maintained safe, secure and clean. Carrying out day-to-day maintenance and minor repairs.

Senior management are only there to collect a cheque. Everyone realizes there are systematic issues in this organization that need to be addressed and fixed, WSD has been going downhill for years but nobody cares enough to implement any necessary changes to policy, structure or resources. Job security for teachers, clerical, trades and custodial but not so much Educational Assistants.
Huge lack of substitutes and long time staff resigning from their positions constantly to go work elsewhere says it all.
Pay is decent, benefits are alright.
Not treated like a human, but a number that’s expected to go with the flow, swimming in shts creek.

I started out as a Sub and in my experience, the level of work for this position may depend on where you work in the division so please keep that in mind.

Connections are an asset for internal job openings.
Physical workplace vibe depends on each school but the present staff are always there for you. Regardless of the location, everybody is nice, friendly, considerate, and helpful.
The starting pay is great and you get a summer vacation, though it’s not paid.

Overall, it’s a great place to work if you like having a good workplace culture and love to help out with kiddos.

I’ve been working as an EA substitute for 5 years with no degree and it’s very hard to get anywhere in this position let alone as a career. If you do happen to have a degree,be expected to land full time work 10 years from when you graduated. Working as a substitute EA is a joke. You’re only babysitting with low pay and you will get treated poorly. Try to find schools that align with your values and you’ll be fine. 

Everyday is a great day subbing at Winnipeg School Division. I am gaining a lot of experiences dealing with diverse kids. Acknowledging and respecting different cultures are big part of the learning. I love the way the management are giving us the opportunity to prove ourselves of what we can give as a substitute teacher. The teachers are very warm. For me, there is no hardest part of the job because being a teacher is a noble profession, so we have to be flexible enough to deal with individual differences and it's challenging and enjoyable. I am really having fun teaching here in Winnipeg.
