Working for Walter was one of the most enjoyable places I've ever worked at. The camp was well serviced, the food was reliably good, and it was staffed by excellent people that made the fact that we were away from home easier to handle. 
I learned many skills during my days there, the most valuable and fun of which was operating the Letourneau 1350 and the Hitachi 8000, although I also enjoyed driving haul trucks and operating some of the smaller equipment.
My co-workers became some of my closest friends, in fact, even now, a year and a half after the closing of the mine I remain in contact with a large number of them via phone, text and Facebook. We even have a Facebook page dedicated to the entire group that used to work there. The people, including one of my supervisors, who remains a close friend, was the best part of the job.
The worst part of my job was dealing with bad blasts, it just made it a little bit harder to maintain the load speed the company wanted us to adhere to.

Everyday had a new challenge at the mine site I worked at the mine as it developed from mine closure to a producing mine. I received a wide variety of knowledge because of the construction dynamic at the mine site. I was responsible for training the employees within our department to become competent samplers and technicians. The hardest part of the job was getting clear communication from the offsite managers it posed a challenge when trying to implement new sampling programs but all were successful in the end. The most enjoyable part of the job was all of the knowledge I gained from the site and my supervisor. I was able to monitor a mine during its closure period and assist with all the challenges of start-up and maintain compliance during production.

Hardest part of this job was backing up where the shovel operator wanted you. Very fatiguing work! 
 
The work schedule wasn't terrible 7 on 7 off and the pay was good

I've enjoyed working at Walter Energy Western Coal, the only problem was, zero job security and very poor management, but they have an excellent salary and benefits. Excellent culture.

A typical day of work was to keep track of people coming and going within the mine. Security. Answering phones, directing calls. Maintaining ambulance and first aid duties. Making sure we had enough mine rescue members. First aid walk ins, drug testing if needed, orientations. Working alone check ins. FLHA's, hot work permits, confined space permits, etc.

Enjoyed the different things to do daily. Always challenging. Loading waste and coal as well as exposing coal seems with excavator and spotting, dumping, and building new haul roads with D10 dozer. The nicest thing is the new eqequipment

I truly enjoyed my first mining experience I was able to learn how to work with a mine team, the management was easy to talk to when a problem arose. Tumbler Ridge is only a couple hours away which allowed my family access to visit.

The job was fun. We all got along perfectly.
A very busy job but after a routine the shifts were passing quite fast.
Everything done in a prefect manner and accurate numbers.

Great support for advancement. Great team workers and support. Able to use your abilities to the fullest with support from upper management

They were really good company to work for plus it was so fun working and loving the coal mine life were everyone was great we all got along plus they were really informative
