Second year refrig apprentice, work for Weiss since starting in 2022.

Typical work day is dependent on the scope of the job.  In the winter, a house can't be left without a furnace so that makes for some long days.  In the last two years I've had the opportunity to work on furnaces, different types of ACs, heat pumps, and hot water tanks.

The lead hands and project managers have helped me to have success in increasing my competency and skill level in the manual installation of equipment as well as understanding the technical requirements for the installations.

Management cares about the welfare of the workers.  For example, at Weiss they will try their best to get you hours during the slow season so that you have more consistent pay.  I also had a close family member pass away during my time here and they were 100% supportive of the time I needed to take care of things.

The workplace culture is professional with real effort made to keep a standard of respect for people of various contexts.  Management is responsive to requests in this respect.

The complaints I have about Weiss are probably going to be the same as if I worked at other companies.  Sometimes a day goes longer than planed, there is  miscommunication and disorganization between sales, management, shop, schedulers, installers, and service personnel.

Overall, I would recommend working here from my experience.

This organization is highly top-down in its structure, with limited input from employees in decisions that affect their work. Leadership does not demonstrate consistent attention to employee engagement or retention. Concerns raised by staff are often overlooked, and communication from management tends to be minimal or dismissive.

Raises are rare and tend to be inconsistent, and favoritism appears to influence certain decisions. Workplace behavior concerns, such as unprofessional or disrespectful comments, are generally not addressed by Management. Gossip is common, and the environment can feel psychologically unsafe for employees who are respectful and hardworking. Many staff members are overworked, underpaid, and undervalued.

Pros: Exposure to complex HR and employee relations situations and some new benefit initiatives (HSA, EAP being considered)

Cons: Top-down management with little regard for feedback, lack of focus on employee engagement and retention, and inconsistent compensation practices and favoritism. Disrespectful or unprofessional behavior often ignored, low psychological safety and high turnover and minimal influence for HR in key people decisions. 

My experience with the company culture was unfortunately negative due to a significant disconnect between leadership and staff. There is a lack of professional standards; promises for change from upper management are rarely acted upon, and the environment is often strained by office gossip and unprofessional conduct from supervisors.Operationally, the company is highly disorganized, largely because leadership—including ownership—frequently circumvents established warehouse protocols. The owner often removes or relocates inventory without documentation, undermining the organization’s workflow. When these issues are raised, feedback is dismissed as a 'resistance to change' rather than addressed as a legitimate operational concern. Without clear communication, respect for internal processes, or a path for advancement, it is a difficult environment for those seeking a professional and structured workplace.

Also, one more thing. You are forced to take a week off for Christmas and if you do not have holidays or sick days banked. You will not get paid for those days. 

I was able to progress through ranks in the company.  I do see a lot of great things about the company and can see Weiss Johnson becoming a great company to work for. There are some issues, as I assume there are with companies this size. Training is a big issue, I remember my first few days being very unorganized, and not for lack of trying. Everything felt very by the seat of your pants. Progressing into a supervisor role I had seen another side of the business I was not aware of. Scheduling issues were a major problem, our reputation to some of our clients wasn’t the greatest. I am a very brand loyal person, if I’m working for a company I want to prove to people it’s the best company for the job and to work for. I feel that Weiss Johnson has that potential and is slowly coming around to it.  I feel that there is a fairly good work to home life balance, the opportunity for extra work is always there for anyone who wants it. Hard work is noticed and acknowledged from my perspective.  There are a few difficulties for the crews in the field which seem to become less of a common occurrence, though I feel they are dealt with accordingly and smooth the lost time that many have complained of it the past. 

Weiss is not a friendly atsmosphere to work at the managers dont care about your will being and will thow you under a buss to save their own buts . The owners are never around or seen and they have no clue on whats going on . The retro fit department is very un orgonized  and love to play the blame game . the sales reprsentives are horrible to work with they will screw you over any chance they can  to make a sale. There is absoutly no work life balance there .Retro manager will tell you what ever you want to hear to avoid conflict . There is no dress code there and you can wear what ever you want (riped shirts, bandanas. pants around your knees , look like a gangster , beer shirts ) the schedulaing is  horrible and every morning your job will switch without notice and your equipment is never pulled properly it is a very stresfull place to work .If you are desprate enough its a quick place to make some money but not a carrer 

It’s unparallel in comparison to any job I’ve ever held in my life. I heard the rumours but needed a job. I didn’t anticipate it could be as bad as it was.

One of their foreman throws his hard hat, glasses, sledge hammers, anything in his vicinity if he gets upset. If you ask a basic question or need material it’s enough to tip the scales.

The project manager plays ignorant to the workings of this company. They have all worked together for a very long time and they all seem to despise each other verbally insulting them behind their backs.

The foreman make insulting remarks to anyone they please and abuse their workers in general.

Spare yourself. Don’t waste your time. These people are absolutely horrible.

I was asked to drive a person who lost their license in my own vehicle. I had to pick him up every day and when I refused to do so my job was threatened. This person was also carrying drugs up to fort Mac during this time.

Fill out your hazard every morning BS for a few, 
Haven’t learned anything new since the first week, hardest part is knowing plumbers are treated better,  In the sense they get all the tools from the company sheet metal always has to ask for tools to get the job done. People are nice on the job site,  management procrastinates, materials never ordered on time, is hard to communicate with. It doesn’t feel good knowing that all the plumbers received $1.50 wage increase from first year to journeyman and the sheet metal division hasn’t received anything but management can spend hundreds of dollars on merchandise for office staff.

Came to Weiss Johnson after working for another mechanical contractor 
The company has been undergoing major management changes over the past year and has been doing a lot of internal restructuring.  Management genuinely  cares about the employees - you are not just a number Emphasizes has been put into developing a team atmosphere unlike what had been previously in place. 
The company culture is constantly evolving and improving. Many of the employees that work here have been here over 2 yrs or more, some returning after working at other companies.
It is a challenging and fast paced environment with opportunity for advancement. 
You get what you put in 

This company is one of the worst I've ever worked for, they employ a very blatant and careless, take everything from the employee and give nothing back mentality, management lacks in overall experience and are not willing to learn from those employees with more experience, failed quoting and project management is often (if not always blamed on the technician) regardless of being set up to fail from day one, quoting on projects is being done by those without the proper knowledge or skill set. Constantly sent to unsafe jobs and blackballed when one expresses the concern.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The management was very interactive with all of the employees. And treated everyone with respect

The work load was always overwhelming. Which is normal for productivity to stay consistent 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There was a lot of politics amongst the foreman and there teams which I found was a complete waste of time and a waste of the company’s time
