West Coast Amusements

Everyday was a different venue.  Travel to destination, set up rides and office (I just did the office set up).
Started out working in ticket sales, and ended up running office on another unit.
I was in charge of making sure rides were logged, tickets weighed, ticket sellers set up with tickets, bracelets and bankroll, making sure all the permits were in order and anything that need to be done.
Dealt with all the workers, uniforms, draws, whatever problems arose at the time.
Handled thousands of dollars in cash everyday.
The hardest part was living on the road.  Loved the office part of it.
Met many interesting people, everyone becomes family after awhile, in this kind of situation.  You soon learn that everyone has there different quirks and you have look past a lot and just see the person for themselves.
It was a fun job but I am from Ontario and wanted to return home to my family.

W.C.A. West coast amusements is a traveling carnival. I had the opportunity to work and travel with them from Victoria Island to Alberta and Saskatchewan.

They provided rented lodging shared with a room mate as well as a shower facility. We moved to each area and stayed within each vicinity for 2-3 days running our games and handing out our prizes, we worked based off of commission or had the choice to go hourly. I stayed with commission and managed to reach top 3 for multiple pay periods out of 20 sales agents. My game was the high striker.

My responsibility was to attract customers to my game and have them play.

Maintenance and organizational management of own equipment, Setup and tear down along with contributed help to others for their games and setups for any pieces that required multiple people.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Proper treatment from the office staff as well as the Owners

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The wet weather that is experienced from time to time.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Once in cities or towns where we will set up for the weekends , The environment is electric with excitement from the crowds that visit.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A tipical day is 16 hours long of family friendly activities.

For the thirteen years I was with west coast amusements I worked in all 3 sides, including rides, concessions, and joint line, I had a very forming time every year. Weather it was setting up or tearing down each attraction with accute attention to details,  running the attractions and serving a wide variety of characters coming to the midway, or just haning out with the fellow employees after work was finished, it was always a fun, enjoyable experience. It's true what they say when they start you out, "this isn't a job, this is a lifestyle." I definitely  agree .

I worked for WCA 15+ years. The management always treated me well, and acknowledged my capabilities and taught me tons of work & life skills. I loved the traveling aspect, as we traveled across Canada. Got to meet and make lifetime friends, there was always laughter daily. It's a hard life, you either love it or you hate it. However working here allowed me to put various skills on my resume, especially customer service, which is huge in the job market today.

A fun place to work if you like people, however the hours are long, the pay isn't great, you pay for everything (meals, bunks, laundry, show shirts) and the weather not always agreeable. The only way you have job security is if your Jamaican and then your treated as royalty. However I learned how to set-up, tear-down and operate a few different rides and my co-workers became like family. But the best part of the job is the smiles on the kids faces.

The days are long in the summer 12 1and 14 hours. It's a lifestyle to work here It is like glorified camping as your on the road going from town to town. Keeping famlies happy one year at a time
 they supply food cards for a fee as the workers have there own food shack to have meals. They can shop for themselves as well.
 Work ends around September 18th every year.

Working at West Coast Amusements was a time to remember, a good go as we used to say.
People do not understand the love that goes into a job like that.

It was satisfying, could be better but manageable

Harding and lot of fun and entertainment

Learned to build stations and work hard. Job was commission based at all times so it was always up to me to make due.  Hard work all the time, and even did some unpaid work which was always every two weeks for about a week, but it is just part of the lifestyle, anyone who joins the Carnival has to do it too.
