Happy Easter Monday!

I wanted to share my observation about Westoba Credit Union. Their operations seem similar to the premise of "The Wizard of Oz," where pulling back the curtain reveals a lack of substance.

Despite promoting themselves as one of Manitoba's top employers, this distinction was paid for rather than earned. As well their high staff turnover rate and poor treatment of non-executive staff also raise concerns. They put their team in a position to fail. 

The repeated mistakes made by the executive team seem to go unnoticed, and the company's operations are poorly managed.

For any credit union considering a merger with Westoba, I would caution them to scrutinize the situation thoroughly. My firsthand experience has left me wary of Westoba, and I would also advise others to exercise caution.

A fast-paced environment lends challenges to the leadership team to effectively coach, support, and train staff.  
Staff turnover is extremely high for those that are not part of the clique, so your career advancement is limited, if not nonexistent.
A lot of red tape exists to make changes to better the organization.
Many personal from all areas of the organization are supportive and eager to provide clients the best product and service.
Technology and processes are lacking in the business which is good and bad. A lot of work needs to be accomplished to bring positive change to the organization where members who pay fees will receive a payout for supporting the local credit union model.  



What is the best part of working at the company?
Westoba offers banking perks that is beneficial

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The company does not care about you, they care about numbers, and family, you have such a high turnover it’s ridiculous 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very jaded and very cliquey, you won’t receive a promotion unless you know someone or are related to someone

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Creating graphics, staff promotions, and working in marketing

Some of the tellers are nice and work together, but there is a very clique like atmosphere upon the managers - and some managers are a bit unscrupulous.  You are expected to constantly take courses, which is great to keep learning, but they do not seem to care if you do all the training if you do not make your "sales" quotas for credit cards and products.  They hold the threat of no annual raise over your head if you do not meet quotas.

Here’s why I say nepotism is rampant in this organization:
1. Top executives don’t have any banking experience. They came from a food processing company. 
2. They hired a 28 year old project manager without any relevant experience. 
3. If you don’t belong in a clique most likely you won’t get any chance of any promotion.
4. You can’t voice your opinion. 
5. Terminating their staff with out a cause.
6. Some managers ego are over bloated.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Management is absolutely atrocious, half of them don’t know what they are even doing. Unless you know them personally, they don’t like or care for you. There is little to no help when training. If you do something incorrectly, you will be severely punished no matter the circumstances. Mental health is constantly overlooked. Work/life balance is nonexistent. It’s a rotating door of new hires.

Overall I enjoyed working there. It was a good experience. But they expected you to put in a lot of personal time that you weren't being compensated for. It was understaffed and sometimes it felt overwhelming dealing with members back to back to back. Too much politics as well.

I would focus on keeping all of the branches clean and customer presentable inside and outside. The management was always in the know and would always have daily meetings with us. About what we did good the previous day, what we did bad, what needs to get done for that day...etc.

I learned a lot as you are required to do a lot in your role
Management was not the most supportive.
Hardest part of the job was that the work load that is required is too much. Your required to know how to do everything, goals are high sales pressure is high from management. 

 

Management refused to make adjustments to help the lenders perform their job better and the credit adjudication team is the poorest quality I’ve ever worked with. The lending team is amazing as are the support staff.
