Whitby This Week

I would walk from house to house to deliver on feet every week from Wednesday to Friday. After every two weeks which is pay week, I go around the same houses I regularly deliver at to collect money ($6.00 for each house). However fair payment is certainly not the case, some customers decide to never answer the door or give procrastinating responses on pay week which can get a bit frustrating overtime because you have to keep going back and they would simply just "forget". These daily newsletters are not free and continuing to deliver inconsistent customers would defeat the purpose of the overall job. On the positive note, this job has definitely helped me develop great relationships with most of my neighbours and got to know a bit more about each person which overall helped with my social and communication skills throughout the years on the job which I can use as an advantage for future jobs. I highly recommend this kind of job for anyone who wants to practice social skills especially when it comes to dealing with customer concerns.

I enjoyed my time as a paper carrier. It taught me many life skills such as learning to handle money and manage my time effectively. I had to communicate with many different types of people which enhanced my confidence and communication skills.

The pay wasn't always fair because it was an optional charge for your customers, meaning if they don't pay you don't get paid. However, this helped me learn the value of sales and the relationships one forms with their customers. The more the customers like you as a person and you do a good job, the more money you can make.  The relationship was very positively correlated.

Building relationships with your customers is actually very fun and very rewarding. You learn new and exciting things from everyone you meet along your route.

I will never forget the lessons I learned whilst out on the job.

my typical work day wasn't that bad I usually finished the job in roughly 20 minutes tops I learned the different type of people in this world those who will let you do you job and those who want to make your job a living h#!$ my management was excellent the hardest part of my old job was getting it down in the rain and/or snow the most enjoyable part of my old job was the people I got too meet the people I met were manly respectful towards me and so was I, I enjoyed the conversations we would have and every day I learned something new.

When I worked as the carrier at Whitby this week it was quite enjoyable, though the clients didn't trust the carriers too much because of their last carrier, but they eventually learnt to trust myself and the other carriers. A typical day would have consisted of Coming home from school, grabbing the papers, putting them together, then handing them out, it was pretty basic. I learned a lot about the paper business, and I sometimes read the papers, and looked at the pictures and it slightly inspired me to become either and author or a photographer.

overall I kind of hated it the pay was terrible it only took 2.5 hours to do. so it wasn't long but sometimes your working outside 2 hours in minus 40 below weather which is almost unbearable its good money I guess when your 13/15 but people I deliver to where very friendly. I remember only two people didn't pay me because pay is optional.those two people  would complain when its snowing like crazy and I delivered it late at night would complain to my boss all the time which was crazy because I made sure the paper was never wet only late.

I have been working for Whitby This Week distributing papers to my neighbours doorsteps since I was 12 years old and still am carrying on with it today. It is a good source of income, although the environment is harsh sometimes throughout the winter. But in the summer is quite enjoyable.The hardest part of the job is bothering people every 3 weeks to give you money and keeping track of it. Even though this was a hassle, it allowed to to learn organization skills at a very young age.

Paper delivery is a great first job!  While being 13, this job gave me an idea of what responsibility is and what time management was. It showed me responsibility by making sure that every Wednesday and Thursday i had to deliver a certain amount of papers to my customers. And it taught me time management because i needed to make sure that my papers were delivered by 6pm. Over all this job was amazing and is great for those who are not old enough for a part time job in a company

I came to ball thinking hard work paid off. Ended up making me a laughing stock. They don’t adhere to their contract and the supervisors are just as guilty as the hourly employees so they hide the facts for each other. There are myths  about accountability and discipline but all you do is sign and get back to work. Everyone needs money but it takes a special type of person to dedicate themselves to a life there. 

I am happy to be apart of Whitby This Week because it has helped me in a few different ways. By going door to door for collection, it has improved my communication greatly, I am no longer shy to talk to strangers and it really put me out there. It definitely  improved my communication skills. It also made me more independent, I did the papers by myself and so it gave me a sense of responsibility and commitment.

A typical day working here was delivering the newspaper to the selected houses, conversing with the home owners/ customers. At this job I leaned time management, organization, work ethic, communication and people skills, and to withstand any weather conditions.
