Wholesale Sports

This is one position I loved and will always be grateful for.  I learned so much in this line of work and I had great co-workers who taught me and guided me as I learned new tasks.  Eventually, I grew in this position from the "new kid" to a more senior role and loved the responsibility.  It was the "fun" place to be and with the economy and the competition being tough on that particular company, they made cut-backs and it was time to move on.  It was a tough decision, but one that I put much thought into.  I am now once again, growing and learning and looking for ways to advance.  I believe in looking forward - because if you concentrate on staring in the rear-view mirror - you will eventually crash.  Positive and forward I go.

a typical day would consist of processing deadline based bill payments, and collecting the necessary backup to facilitate the requirements posted for audit purposes (i.e. filing, proper signatories for cheques etc.) management is fluid and indecisive at times considering the ratio of upper management employees and team members is to my knowledge, largely favoring upper management, co-workers can be either largely enjoyable or quite off-putting as attitude will vary from person to person, the hardest part of the job was attempting to communicate the issues around deadlines, vendors etc. in a way that made sense to the upper management staff, communication was sparse and direct.

I loved my job, the problem solving, the customer service aspect when a customer leaves with a smile on their face.  Opening stores and training staff new to Wholesale Sports.  Dealing with numbers and making sure paperwork is done correctly by all closing MODs.  The hardest part of the job was dealing with staff issues and mistakes done at the end of each day by an MOD but it was also rewarding.  I worked in a store that had everything to do with my life outside of work.  Hunting, camping and fishing.  We at Wholesale Sports were like family and we continue to do things together since the store closed.

A Typical retail position in the outdoor sporting goods industry. Lots of public interaction and opportunity to become an expert in the product lines. The arrival of new product is always exciting and being given the opportunity to educate the public is a bonus. Because this is part of a chain of stores, the on-hand product is often not based on local requirements but those of the chain as a whole, so it can be frustrating when customers cannot find specifically what they are looking for. Much of the staff is part-time and temporary so there can be a lack of product knowledge and dedication.

A typical day at work involved facing and restocking product.
Ensure security of firearms. Checking P.A.L.are valid. Selling firearms. Selling accessories required
Ensuring customers understand the calibre of rifle to purchase the correct ammunition.
I learned how to deal with difficult customers so they could leave the store satisfied because of the amazing service.
Culture was friendly, family oriented and excellent management.
The job was enjoyable every day and there was not really anything to hard about the job.
The most enjoyable part of the job was satisfying the customer and seeing the smiles on their face.

Working for management that treats its employees like disposable garbage is the worst. Not the case here. Management in Winnipeg  treats the employees well, creates a sense of trust and respect, and addresses problems fairly. If you do a good job you are recognized and valued. If you've ever worked retail or a lower paying job somewhere else the difference here is readily apparent. 

Wholesale Sports on a corporate level has great discount programs for the products offered by the store. 

Only problem is that it's a retail job with a retail wage but overall compensation is better than something like WalMart or Canadian Tire.

Great customers who made working there enjoyable, I learned a lot about hunting and fishing and that was the best part of the job expanding my knowledge to be able to apply it to real life living up north. 

The store management was horrible for not bringing in the proper inventory for our region being up north. Instead we were getting more inventory for prairie land.  

The hardest part of the job was seeing how the store manager was not a team player. Didn't show up for work and put blame on different people. He play favoritism and was not a leader.

Trucks would come in to deliver products, we would off-load them using pallet jacks and then scan them into the system to be sold. Learned how to complete a shipping manifest. also learned a lot about the products we sold. Management was good, they kept everything flowing smoothly. Got along with all my co-workers, everyone was hard working. Hardest part was the lull when certain hunting seasons were over, best part was gathering product to be shipped out to other locations as per customers requests.

I begin my day with restarting all the computers at the Front End so they will not to be sluggish and work for half the day at least. I always arrive early after I am done restarting the tills I put away my stuff in my locker and I relax.

Once I am done and punched in I go speak to my boss to find out if anyone has called in or anything I should know, I am Front End Dept. Lead so it is my job to find out this information.

I then communicate with my coworkers and I process transactions and engage in customer concerns.

Start @ 7 am and finish @ 15:30 hrs with half hr.for lunch.All the ins and outs of ship/rec.and learning something new everyday.Management is awesome and they stand behind there employees,co-workers awesome and it is a fun atmosphere to work in.I think the hardest part of the job is the removal of the skids that the products come on.The enjoyable part is working with co-workers and helping customers have an awesome experience of being looked after when t hey come into the store and leave knowing they were well looked after.
