Williams Moving & Storage

I found that working at Williams Moving & Storage for the 9 years I was there before they went bankrupt was a great place to work. I learned a lot and management as well as co-workers were great people to work with. I would say that the only hardest part about the job was doing really big jobs either moving 20,000+ pounds or delivering 20,000+ jobs 3x or more a week, it can take a lot out of somebody especially if the jobs were 10-12 hours long. That's a lot of lifting and walking with heavy pieces going up and down stairs in 3 story homes with tight corners and narrow hallways as well as steep driveways. 

The most enjoyable part of the job would be working with my co-workers telling jokes and laughing with our customers to make not only the job go by quicker but also making it easier on our customers if and whenever they were worried and nervous about the move. We would always show them how we did things to let them know that the belongings were in good hands, which would help them not to worry so much.

I was on call if they needed an extra mover or driver. Alot of heavy work to move a whole house/appt into a truck and make it fit. Great manager called the nite before if needed or the day if needed very nice person.
Coworkers were hard workers and great guys. Some very heavy objects, back breaking work, people not knowing how to pack their house up into boxes................ Going to different cities to move people or people giving you things because they don't have room for certain things and if you moved quicky and cleanly many gave you tips, was very nice that people expressed that they were happy with your work.

The normal work day start time (for the crews) was 7:30, but my normal day started at least at 6:30 & sometimes there were drivers waiting for me when I got to work at 5:30. 
It was interesting to learn how to work with all the new dispatcher & their different way of doing the same job. Also with new & or junior people, with the different ways they would work & what was most important to them. 
It didn't take long for me to decide that (in my opinion) "I" had the best job in the company, as I was along way from head office politics, & not on the front line where the crews had to deal with "move day stresses".

Williams Moving & Storage was a great family orientated company to work for.  They were very accommodating and flexible with hours/schedule/pay.  They provided a sense of security for as long as I can remember.   It was my home away from home. 

I had my fair share of customers who were stressed out from moving and that was probably the hardest part of the job.  Not everyone deals with stress that well and some people converted that to arrogance and ignorance.  That's what I was there for though - to provide them a sense of comfort and help them along the way.  De-stressing someone who is about to do a cross country move is huge and actually quite rewarding.

I had a good time working for the company and working with my co workers. I was able to work my way up and become a valuable asset. Just a few things that should have been changed, but was still a great place to work for. I enjoyed working with our customers and training new staff members. I would say the hardest part of the job was the long hours when summer came around. Summer time hours could go as long as 15 hours a day doing either one big job or 3 medium size jobs. I learned that am a people person who enjoys working for and helping people.

This is the type of job that is somewhat satisfying in the sense of completing your daily tasks means just that. Many jobs feel like everyday is the same but under these circumstances that is not the case. No 2 days are alike and you will most likely manage to learn something new every day.

3 weeks after I started, everyone in the overseas department had left, leaving me all alone and brand new to the industry.  My direct supervisor was located in Vancouver while I was in Calgary and she was excellent and supported me along the way.

A great company with lots of opportunities   .  Management and staff were respectful and great to work with.   A new job brings excitement and can be a trying when learning new programs and processes.  It all comes with a new job.

A typical day at work was fast paced.  I worked independently and was out of my office often.  My manager was based out of British Columbia so I had little to no supervision.  The most enjoyable part of my job was meeting different people everyday.

90% of the time i had worked with Williams Moving & Storage was a great experience. I would work either in a team of 2 or 4 and some times 6. I had fun interacting with customers to help ease them of their worries about the move.
