Wilsons Gas Stops

While working for Wilson's Fuel it became evident to me that there could be an opportunity to climb up from Part-time Cashier to Management.  After a few months of being an employee I began to be trained with the Management duties.  I throughly enjoyed this and eventually became assistant Manager, and from time to time I was Acting Site Manager.  A great day was when I put on my assistant manager badge.  I got along great with all of the employees and management.  I began to train employees and over see product orders and communicated directly with suppliers on a daily basis.  I found the interviewing and hiring process to be very interesting.  I also established relationships with area and provincial supervisors with Wilson's Fuel and I believe these relationships and my work ethic all played a part in me being awarded the Wilson Family Scholarship In September 2013. This was a 3000 dollar scholarship which I used to go back to university.

I didn’t work for Wilson’s for a long time, they fired me near the end of my probation for calling in about my back injury ( I had a disc in my spine that was hitting my nerves and couldn’t walk). I had only texted one other time, I even checked back on our text, when I had a face rash but she complained I called in too many times even though they were both medical issues out of my control. They were low on staff because someone left but it shouldn’t be an employees job to deal with employers and how much staff there is, that’s a managers duty and I wasn’t physically able to come in. The manager was not understanding. The manager also talked bad about me to management at another business next to us, very unprofessional... if you are someone with mental health issues and/or health issues I don’t recommend the Tantallon Wilsons, It was not the best experience. 

Wilson's Esso is amazing!! Went there with a nervous mindset. They were very quick to make me feel comfortable, they have an amazing team and work environment. Very thorough when training and they actually help through your mistakes, they build you up instead of making you feel like you done something wrong. Wilson's Esso in Gander has given me more confidence and helped me become a better me. The staff is absolutely amazing, couldn't ask for any better people to work for/with. It's like a cozy little family, also the customers always make the day so much better, they are considerate and helpful towards someone learning, I love that about this store.

I wouldn’t let my worst enemy work for this place. The Management is poor hours are either very early or very late and most times you work alone which can be scary. I experienced burnout and with the labour shortage during this pandemic found it very hard to get time off without receiving a guilt trip from my manager or assistant manager. I was called in to work on Christmas Day the day before because a part time student called in sick those are days with your small children you’ll never get back. Wages are very poor in comparison to the rising cost of living after 8 years I saw very little reward for my hard work and dedication although I always had outstanding employee reviews.

There is no stress with the work 
Only stressful part at times 
is when you have disgruntled people

Work environment is very pleasant 
Like a family
 discussion with each other as friends and family 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Typical day is very busy and also very good with the staff work as a team in whole

The employees over all are fun to work with and I love the customers, fast pace. Interesting place to work most days. Positive atmosphere with the staff but not the manager. Manager has his favorite staff members and they rule the store. Staff that have been there for a long time dont get as many hours as staff that has only been there a couple years of few months. The part time staff usually gets full time hours but wont be put on as full time. Over all if the management would change it would be a much better place.

Wilson's is a company that really cares about its employees. They offer the best scholarships of any employer and they always promote from within (definitely a company you can start at the bottom at and work your way to the top). The company is managed well overall however at an individual store level, it can be dodgy (there are some questionable managers). An excellent company if you are looking for part-time work, an okay company if you are looking for full-time is. Full-time get basic benefits but they pay is low comparatively speaking.

Some of my colleagues were my fav other then some of the customers 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The management was the most stressful because of the fact that they would change the schedule around without warning or telling the staff especially the staff that were being switched 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very fun but toxic management 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very much full of stress.

Depending on which location you work at, it can be slow or fast-paced. Gas stations are not required to give their employees breaks under the labour laws, but people who smoke are free to do so seemingly whenever. There are many issues with management. They will often push many of their responsibilities onto the part-time staff. Managers change often and are not held to the same standards as employees. If they are, they aren't observed enough for anyone to do anything about it.

No work/life balance, NONE!!! Main reason I left, training was inconsistent, or some would not tell you how!! And wait to see you fall, other managers talked behind my back, customers are nice and the part- time staff were great, even tho the store was robbed twice in 6 months, I was not sleeping and always on edge, if your not working you are on call...... that is not balance of life, I really feel sorry for store managers at Wilson's too much of a work load.
