Winnipeg Child and Family Services

I ma a Social Worker, graduated last year from the University of Manitoba with a BSW degree.
For the past 10 months I have been employed with Winnipeg Child and Family Services as a protection worker (Front line)
THis has been a great experiance and I have gained a lot of great new skills as well as reaching out to and interacting with great people. The hardest part of this job was being in a posiotion of total authority as well as taking on the perspective of working from a "family centered approach" as well as working strenghts based. I enjoyed my experiance there but the job was no longer for me.
I loved interacting with all different professionals ranging from doctors, psychiatrists, mental health practioners, teachers, principals, parents, children as well as youth.
I have gained more confidance as a social worker from this last position and I will continue to take the new skills with me into a new job/career that I am employed in.

I don't beleive the higher up we're truly helping the children in what they need or hiring proper staff that would be able to aid the  children in what they need as for letting things slide like proper natruital menus and activities. Keeping them in school. And programs that are important and the children had previously enjoyed. Having the proper training for staff to work with the kids we have been getting as in harder to handle and workers failing in working as a team with coordinators and as a team to do the best job for thr client as reasonably possible.

.Most  hours are long, 12 hour shifts, you are working with ages newborn-19 years, depending on the site. 
You can expect to be assaulted physically, emotionally and or mentally at some point during the employment here.
Don't expect support from management or your co-workers as they might be the cause of your abuse or they will act like you did something to deserve it.

Management does not listen to individual workers concerns regarding caseload demands. Workers are expected to do more with less, and burnout is inevitable. It's a high stress job with management and a system that works against the social workers who are trying their best. Also, they can't keep people so now they aren't even hiring social workers, but people with other degrees. Why is it that they don't try to fix the demand issues so they can retain staff instead of making staff feel horrible for not being able to do their job well. 

I worked at home, I already knew what I was needed to do considering I have my own children, but this was a lot more easier because if the baby needed something extra it was covered and they would help find something that was needed if I could not, and they covered for the transportation needed to care for the baby.(ex. doctors appointments)
I would say the hardest part was the late night feedings, I was mentally prepared but not physically prepared, but it got easier after a couple weeks.

Often walking into the unknown.  Incredible variety in the job and workday.  Co-workers are great and generally provide support.  Challenging job with few rewards but none the less a purposeful and meaningful career that is never boring.  Provincial benefits and salary overall is a bit mediocre considering the stress level. 

The staff at Winnipeg Child and Family Services are very friendly, engaging and supportive. I have developed supportive relationships among my supervisor and fellow teammates. I am always encouraged to ask questions and learn something new. The organization also offers plenty of valuable training opportunities.

Very flexible work hours and days off, with approved over-time from time to time. I enjoyed dealing with children of varying mental and developmental needs, suicidal ideation, doing drugs, etc. The staff and management are very supportive of each other and the children in care.

Compassionate and empathy assistance towards deprived and abuse children and youth in our community.
I learned how children are being neglected by their biological parents who are mostly addicted on drug abuse.
Management team are great.

Favoritism.   Secrets.   Unresponsive, inexperienced, incompetent management. Lack of communication.   Lack of support.    Lack of collaboration.   Punishment for speaking up or advocating.   Lots of people taking stress leaves or simply choosing to escape.
