Workers Compensation Board of Alberta

In the approximate 11 week training, the trainers are very optimistic and leave the impression that you have started working with a very astute employer/ company.  But, then you go to work.  

Work-life balance is non-existent.  The Board raves about all of the supports and resources, but these are so very inconsistent between the coaching team, mentors, supervisors, co-workers, etc. The caseload is FAR too high with cases ranging from rather simple injuries to years worth of appeals that are jumbled between multiple case managers.  Case Managers are expected to be decision maker, counsellor, doctor, interpreter, legal assistant, data entry clerk with the additional expectation of completing all of these 'hats' very quickly.  The motto is "work quick and if you make a mistake, it can always be fixed', but this leaves the injured workers and employers with very little trust in WCB, the adjudicators, case managers, and the process.  

Injured workers are treated FAR better than the WCB staff. Management and supervision push stats, stats, stats - but it should be about the actual betterment of the injured worker and employer - this is NOT the case, especially at duration timelines.  

Mental health amongst the WCB staff is so high, which has resulted in extremely high numbers of WCB staff taking medical leave.  This leads to the claims being monitored/ managed by other adjudicators, case managers, etc., over and above your own caseload.  

So WCB offers overtime - YAY - let's have less work-life balance with the expectation of working OT because it is being offered.  Their solution - hire more people.  It's just a joke and for a company that has been around for 50+ years, you'd think the management would implement real solutions, rather than multiple platforms to work off.  They have no idea of what effective or efficient business management is - but eh, they talk a good game.

I worked at WCB Alberta for 7 years.  My experience with the organization was positive.  Great wages and benefits, room for advancement and opportunities for growth.    It is a lot of work and you have to be good in time management, be able to multi-task, prioritize work and be organized.  The only down fall can be the stress that comes from some claimants not complying but overall 90% of your caseload just wants help recovering from their injury and going back to work.  There are many opportunities to move up or apply for different jobs in the organization.  Overall, I enjoyed my time at WCB.

WCB was an amazing place to work, with amazing people. The job, benefits, and salary were great. Upper Management however was not, a lot of times they didn't support the staff under them which made it hard to be successful when working on certain files or cases. Usually the squeaky wheel would get the worm which I didn't find fair to clients that really required the services that WCB is able to offer. A lot of politics were played by Upper Management as well which made it hard to move up the corporate ladder if you didn't want to play the game as well. 
Other than that it was one of the best places I ever worked, with some of the most amazing people and direct supervisors

What is the best part of working at the company?
The people I worked with directly were great, and the organization's mission is a noble one.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Reporting to people who didn't understand my job and who were unfit to judge the quality of my work.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
On the surface very welcoming and cuddly. Don't look at diversity, though, as the entire executive is very not diverse.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful and I was unaware of what was going on most of the time.

Unfortunately, the upper management team has lost the plot and is creating a toxic work culture, this creates a division between the people doing the actual work, and the supervisors, managers, directors, etc.

Supervisors and managers will never be honest with you and will target you if you try to speak up and provide any suggestions for change.

Your entire ability to flourish within the board is entirely dependent on who your supervisor is and if they like you or not, if they don’t, you have to get out of that team. Fast.

WCB offers excellent benefits and perks, but the work environment isn't worth it. Clients can be awful to you and very little will be done about it. The service managers are doing their best (mostly) but direction from the higher ups make it almost impossible to do your job well. After being told repeatedly what needs to change in order to help our clients succeed, management went the opposite direction and made it even harder to help and made even more work for the staff. If you're a person whose looking for a job and doesn't actually care about the people you are there to help, this is the place for you.

A great place to work- environment was friendly, lots of promotion and support for health for employees (ie. exercise classes, gym); my team became my family, one that I miss very much.  There were opportunities of advancement if you know how to network within the organization but if you didn't know someone, it was harder to get in;  Wish I hadn't left- trying to rejoin again but it's hard to get back in once you've left

Pays fair, insanely good benefits package and many hidden perks that worth up to thousands. Most managements are being supportive and know what they are doing. Lots of unskillful staff that just wanted to avoid responsibility and do the bare minimum, often they are trying to hide their dumbness by being arrogant and rude. The overall culture is pretty toxic. You end up take much more workload and responsibilities if you are smarter than others and serious about your career.

Best company to work. The management is very friendly and organized. WCB really looks after their employees. They have the best health benefits and give each employee a health spending account. The job itself is fast pace on most days, which makes the day go by faster. Would high recommend working here. Employees have the option if they want to work from home or go to the office which is amazing :) Have the opportunity to get earned time off, an extra day off a month if you work extra 25 mins a day. Pay is good. 

Work at the WCB is very fast-paced. There is very strong focus on customer service. The work can be stressful but it is very rewarding to help injured workers as they recover from their injuries and return to work or gainful employability.

The management is very supportive. 

WCB provides excellent salary and benefits. 

The staff at WCB work hard but are very supportive of each other and team building is important.

There is opportunity for advancement. 

I would recommend WCB as a fantastic place to work.
