This is a great place to learn about the realities of the field and learn them fast. 
At the emergency shelter, you are double staffed, at the residential homes, you will be working single staffed most times, but you always have support from management and other sites during the days, and at night there is support from the other sites and after hours on-call.
If you work hard, and remain professional, they notice and you can move up in the organization. Management is super supportive and if they see potential they work hard in helping you grow and teaching you what you need to know.  
It's a difficult job, you're working at a shelter, they run from a harm reduction approach and that can throw a lot of people off. That being said, it's still a great place to be and the relationships you can build with the youth and other staff is incredible. You get to experience so much, like how to help youth from a clinical perspective, and how to help them navigate funding through OW, ODSP etc. 

Most members of management are very understanding and great to work under. However, the few bad apples between the general management and case management teams seemed to have made my experience at Wyndham House a toxic one, especially with the way my last week working there went.
Though I definitely learned a lot in my time there, and appreciate the countless training opportunities, I cannot get the sour taste out of my mouth that both the Program's Director, and a member from the general management team left. 
I left my position here feeling under-valued, under-appreciated, and unheard. 

Would not recommend this shelter to work at. Overall, a lot of my experiences with Wyndham House were positive, but towards the end, some of management really started to show their true colours. 

A typical day is 12-hour shifts, continental (days and nights). Security searches at the door, preparing meals for the clients and socializing with them. Daily logs of each client and cleaning.

It's a learn as you go job, there isn't really any training. Think of it as a babysitter. There are opportunities to learn about the social work aspect of it, but that's something you'll learn on your own time.

The coworkers and clients I worked with were generally amazing, coworkers were passionate and the clients were always eager to strike a conversation.

The hours were awful, I worked 12 plus hours a day on many occasions and switched from day shift to night shift with only a day's notice. Support from management is non-existent, so make sure you have critical thinking skills.



Management is never on-site and don't care about the safety or opinions of employees. When they are on-site you will be spoken to like a child and your complaints ignored. Clients smoke/deal meth and carry weapons on-site and regularly threaten each other and staff. Disgusting working conditions with no proper PPE, you get wrist length disposable gloves to clean bathrooms and pick up clothes and bedding (you do their laundry for them) and that's it. You are also single staffed at most locations with no cameras inside the entire building with 7-14 clients. Pay is literally poverty wage, so that says a lot. No opportunity for advancement at all. Don't work here until management improves conditions and pay.

Extremely rewarding and worthwhile job, even if you have limited experience, learning on the job has been most fulfilling. The team of staff and management are truly supportive and professional. Had the opportunity to work under one of the best supervisors and always felt seen and heard. Staff will always have your back and if you advocate for yourself and your clients, it is one of the best places to work. Hours are as they would be in any social or health care setting but you learn to appreciate your time with the youth. 

Wyndham House provides a wonderful learning experience and opportunity to all staff, and is a great entry level position for individuals looking to get into the Social Work field. There are chances to grow within the agency and training opportunities offered. The management team, case management team, and front line team are all very supportive of one another, and I never felt worried to ask anyone for help. All staff have the common goal of providing a safe place for clients and the agency is constantly growing its programs which is an exciting thing to be a part of. 

One of the best places to get experience in shelter setting. I've worked at other shelters but this is were I would feel I was actually doing things and learning. You're supported by management and wonderful caseworkers if you want to grow. They'll sit with you and walk through the process. In case of IR management has your back and debrief with you. It's a young organization with one of the best staff (except for 1-2 older staff who try to create toxic work environment against management). Definitely will recommend. 

At Wyndham House, there is an opportunity to engage in meaningful work with youth while also having the potential to learn a great deal. It's evident that genuine care and a shared goal of providing support and services to youth permeate the organization. There are opportunities to work in various settings such as long-term and short-term residential beds. Additionally, Wyndham House offers training opportunities and pathways for growth within the agency.

The management team, case management team, and support staff are all supportive and foster a welcoming environment for learning and development.

An okay place to get started in the field of social work but management and training is almost non-existent. I wasn't surprised as my first few shifts or "training" consisted of low level morale, criticism towards management, lack of guidance when navigating situations and "fend for your self" atmosphere. 

Some really great employees to train but you have to be really self motivated to get anything done. With the schedule, you would for sure be getting shifts if you are in need of income with the number of relief shifts.

Wyndham House has many different programs to work in, you will get really amazing experience and there is also internal job postings so area to move up easily. 

The pay recently increased, there is EAP and a wellness group. The team comes from all different backgrounds so you can learn a lot. 

You will be working with clients who experience mental hearth and substance issue struggles so that is expected.
