I was really excited to work at YW. I wanted to work for a place that was progressive, collaborative, and working towards their strategic goal or being the best place for women to work. When I received the offer I really hoped that I had found that place. 

I quickly determined that my excitement was misplaced. I found that the internal atmosphere was not as progressive as they seemed to me on the outside. The entire culture seemed very fear based. I witnessed staff talk about each other in ways I had never seen in a workplace - ways I would never dream of. In all honestly, it’s probably because so many of the staff seemed severely burned out - but the result is a harmful environment. Internal communication was severely lacking.  Policy application seemed inconsistent. Attempts to make improvements were met with resistance. Conversations about problems met with blame shifting. In my experience, many basic supports were not in place and requests for them were met with being made to feel incompetent or unreasonable. Truly - I am heartbroken at how different this place was than what was made out to me.  I hope they work towards improvement but I worry they have a very long road to get there.

Not only will you be extremely underpaid and exhausted from burnout because they can’t keep ESW’s, you will be belittled and yelled at by the newest manager. Expect to deal with frequent overdoses and verbal abuse from clients with no penalty/support. You will be solo staffed majority of the time and pressured to take on extra shifts. Your concerns/mental wellness won’t be taken seriously and management is overly protected from complaints. Staff consistently take stress leaves and sick leave because it’s such a toxic environment due to poor “leadership” and lack of consistency. Management mentality is stuck in the 80’s with no sign of change. They have lost so many good staff because of senior staff taking priority. The people who suffer the most are the clients when a place is run so poorly. 

Poor management, staff are treated as disposable, poor support for staff. Little to no sincere acknowledgement for the work the team does. The fact that they are the highest paying shelter in the region but still have an unbelievably high staff turn over should say enough. Working with the clients is challenging and great- it is management and the toxic environment they create that makes the workplace poor. Management does not acknowledge the environment they create. It could be a great place- with a new management team. A lot of talk, no action and nothing gets done by management for staff or clients. 

high stress and severely underpaid. expect to work alone almost every shift. clients are incredible and you will interact with a very diverse population however management mostly is awful. new manager appears to bring a fresh perspective however short staffing and lack of support/staffing inconsistencies will burn you out. I left because of the solo staffing burnout and total lack of support and accountability from management. if pay was better I would have stayed as the clients are challenging at times but so amazing 

Management team is dysfunctional and exploitative. Staff are not supported in a meaningful way. Hypocrisy is prevalent— there’s a lot of “talk” and much less “action.” You expect to take abuse from clients, but you don’t expect to take the worst of it from management! Love the clients, other frontline staff, but management needs to get their team together and take accountability for the impact of their actions and stop letting people that are burnt out keep making bad decisions.

It’s not a bad job if you’re interested in engaging with clients from a marginalized population. You’re expected to work under high stress and understaffed, and new management that started at the end of January doesn’t seem to care about employee’s needs, nor do they validate you in situations. Management needs sensitivity training and communication training, and to acknowledge the wants and needs of their staff. Given zero guidance for the most part and thrown into a dumpster fire. 
Would only give a plus for the other shelter workers and clients you interact with. 

I worked at the YW shelter and it was an amazing experience. I enjoyed working together and feeling good about my skills and getting along with my co-workers. I would like to thank the management team and staff for giving me the opportunity to work with them. I learnt a lot from my colleagues and developed new skills. I left because I was looking for a permanent job with more hours. I will return if I get a permanent job at the shelter. 

The best staff to work with however, the management is terrible. Manager is never around, employees need to deal with things that should be dealt with by the manager due to their absence. There is very little money allocated to buy things for the children or your classroom which results in constant broken toys or having to use your own money to buy new ones. 

Management is soul-crushingly awful for decades and have solidified a toxic work environment. Good staff leaves and those that are willing to toe the line and do ignore client needs are rewarded. 

Even for just a few months of experience, the company is a poor option as good references from them are not highly regarded amongst similar organizations.
