The salary and benefits are industry leaders but there is a reason for that. The organization has to many managers that spend to much time trying to justify their positions. The end result is that the average employee suffers. The commissioner came from the private sector and new Director the same, result? Neanderthal thinking, ie; operations switched to 24/7 schedule. 12 hour shifts 7 days a week. They think there is a cost savings, trust me, no cost savings, 40 hour work week spread out into 168 hour work week with 40 hours of work. Other municipalities have tried it but found that it wasn't feasible. Unfortunately management is more concerned about there own vertical movement in the organization to voice a dissenting opinion, the end result is the workers affected by this decision have there lives turned upside down. I have seen management scramble to clean up operations centre, spending tens of thousands of dollars to impress the local councillors on there visit during public works day. Council is being hoodwinked by the current management team, too much waste and stupid new initiatives that do nothing but pump up managements ego. One more thing, if management doesn't like you, they will find a way to get rid of you. I have seen this done too many times to some very talented employees.

I started here through a temp agency , right away I noticed the environment was very relaxed and management was very supportive of all things, small or large. management treats you like a person. Made quite a few friends working here and when I finished my temp contract I was offered a position at the plant, a raise and was even "promoted" to quality control due to my supervisor noticing my performance daily. Was offered the option for extra work on maintenance days if I wanted to make extra money. Ultimately I decided to leave to pursue other opportunities and have sorely regretted leaving since then!

Payroll - salary and benefits are good
Work/Life balance - can be quite good
Culture - senior management try to promote a healthy work environment with room to grow

Typical though (for this department) - Do not stay in one position for more than 2 years or you will be typecast in your role.  Management does not encourage any type of career growth and external hires fill the majority of new hires.  Any expressed dissatisfaction with the ability to take internal courses, take on additional responsibilities or new roles is not addressed in any meaningful way.

There are too many management levels and not enough review of the "work" that management is doing.  More areas should have 360 feedback reviews; senior management should act on those reviews and have strict and thorough follow up to ensure that real change occurs.

York Region is not a good place to work if you are in management. Depending on who you report to, you may be shielded from realities higher up but at and near the very top there are some serious issues. They will do a fabulous job of talking the talk but when it come to living the preached ideals, they fail miserably. In the process of justifying, higher level pays at the highest levels, the pay grades for the entire organization is some of the highest you find in the government sector which is great for those working there but not the tax payer. You have little independence of thought and there is ample well hidden discrimination in place. If you are looking for a healthy work environment to make a difference, best to not waste your time at YR.

I mostly carried out my assigned research projects independently. The projects turned out to be among my greatest professional achievements in my young career. The products developed in those projects continue to be used and referred to today.

I learned about key trends in my profession, and how to plan out projects.

My supervisors provide strong guidance on projects. They are also very personable and I enjoyed their hospitality in house parties.

Co-workers are friendly and helpful. It is very easy to ask for help.

Hardest Part - Long commute (I spent 2 hours by bus each way),

I do feel very lucky to be working for a great organization such as York Region. As privileged as I am, working in a temporary position is very stressful - not knowing how long the contract will last or if we're extended, and it's hard to land a permanent position because of not knowing the in's and out's of every team. I understand that positions in Public Health are based on funding but the temporary status constantly gives an uneasy feeling. The culture I think has shifted too...upper mgt seems to try to be very thankful very often which seasoned staff say is a change. I would still recommend York Region to anyone.

YR is the best employer, very supportive of their employees. Great place to work.

I love my job, co-works and management, can’t say that my job/company is stressful.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very inclusive and diverse and welcoming environment.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My position is administrative and customer support, very hectic and busy but worth it as I am supporting the most vulnerable people in our community.

A typical day looks like this 
You arrive at work 730 am 
Meeting from 730 to 830 talking about what you did or doing on the weekend and after work.
830 to 9 get dressed
9 to 10 coffee tailgate Meeting 
10 to 12 start work
12 to 1 lunch
1 to 230 work
230 to 3 break 
3 to 4pm go to yard unload trucks sign out
Tax payers pay for this literally 3 or 4 hours of work from region employees who are grossly over paid

The regional municipality of york provided great benefits that were 100% paid for by the organization; which these days is unheard of.  It is a unionized environment (other then HR/management) so advancements can be few and far between and working between management and the unionized staff can be a difficult process.
