I liked being a Non Medical Helper. I did it for 4 years, the casual hours suited me as I could fit them around my studies.  
It was a very rewarding job, helping and aiding studies with different disabilities.
Roles would include exam invigilation, note taking and site support for the visually impaired. 

You got regular training and qualifications.

My only gripe was I felt mentors were treated a little better and one lady was allowed to be a mentor on her first year while the rest of us was told to wait a year but then they stopped it so only those with previous mentor experience could mentor the following years.

I also found the learning support manager who was our Line Manager a bit passive aggressive at times. Made a bit deal about minor issues some of which were something of their own doing but would pass the blame. They wasn't the most vigilant  at times despite telling us to be.

The International Office works closely with academic staff to provide a fulfilling and rich experience for overseas students who have taken the decisive step to study and live outside their country of origin.  This brings its own challenges for staff who provide a welcoming and supportive background to allow students to achieve their full academic potential.

The Director International role provides the opportunity to coordinate the full lifetime experience for students, from counselling and advice, through to application and enrolment and then to arrival and study.

What is the best part of working at the company?
None it was all about who was queen bee and doing as you were told. The best part was finishing time and being paid for hard work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
One certain supervisor had to have a say in everyone else’s business and couldn’t organise ether own staff so it felt most days you were doing other staffs work while they sat down drinking tea .

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It says one thing but means another 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy busy busy no time to eat or drink if the supervisor dislikes you

As York St John is a small university, there are fewer staff and so it is a more diverse workload per person. This is great because you get to learn a lot of different skills however it is also confusing as to what direction your role is heading in to. However, I've learned a lot during my time here and I am grateful for the support I've received. 
The management are good and the benefits are great. All my co-workers are lovely also.

Great to work for, I gained a lot of leadership experience as I had to make sure the students on my particular campus were settling in okay, respecting the terms of agreement contract and work alongside security and the accommodation team. The hardest part was having to detach yourself from some students and helping them in the best way you can without getting too involved. My favourite part was getting to know everyone and meeting people from all over the globe.

After working at York St John for the past three years I can attest that employees are supported and encouraged to achieve their potential. As a student ambassador I mostly work at the university's open days where I have the opportunity to work alongside the student recruitment team which has given me great insight into how recruitment functions in the workplace.

The job was fun and rewarding, especially as a student job, obviously not the highest-paid role, but that's understandable. We didn't always know what was expected of us, but the management was open to feedback as the role has changed every year they ran the programme. I wish I could do it over again!

Loved it! Staff are amazing, students are tolerable, good system set up, they really value your time, effort and work. I felt really valued whilst volunteering at the clinic, it was nice to make a positive impact amongst other. A job where you’re really helping out. 

York St john was a small university. staff were friendly and approachable and students lived in halls of residence for the first year  making it easy to meet new people. there are plenty of clubs to join and the course was enjoyable.

Good place to work, was disappointed with limited opportunities but would have liked to progress. Felt held back in limited opportunities to develop and gain promotion.
