Thee shifts and the hours are not bad. And the expectations are unrealistic but very clear. They provide training for everything and overall the work is not terrible if you don't mind taking initiative or getting your hands dirty. The biggest challenge is the workload and the repetition of it all. The expectation of what should be possible every day might not be a reality from one day to the.next.  If you can manage that unspoken expectation along with the jerrymanderimg that goes on with job positions and postings here them you will be fine. The work enviroent becomes toxic if you don't just stay in a bubble and ignore the injustice and imbalance of work distribution and pay scales. This is all complimented by some nopotism and work contracts and policy written on tissue paper.

I think because of the pension and benefits it might be attractive but the wage is barley livable after deductions. They will match pension but again consider you give away real money you earned every paycheque for a promise that that real money and the fake top up should be there later. As of this writing we have 2x more people collecting pension than those that are currently employed paying into it, I don't suppose that can last forever. Consider that is because they try to run a skeleton crew to cover operational needs. That would be great if HR only hired the best of the best. But as an equal opportunity employer you can expect the average of the average. So if you are a hard worker there is lots for you here and it can only end badly.

I am trying to stay employed here but am having trouble being neurotic enough to tolerate the environment. I've spent years here trying to find a rythm to accell at this job and the worst things about it seemed to be the most steady at the wheel. 

The future of education is going to be build from the failings here. I can recall many good memories here but I have to.struggle past the other experiences that really took me further away from my faith. Your effort and time will be swallowed whole, but if you need a job just show up take the money and don't look back.

Overall I owe a debt of gratitude to the company because I am hitting the job market hard. I have decided to also join the pursuit of higher education. 

I tried to bring dignity and respect to custodial and maintenance workers here but between employee conduct and the.some.of the megalomaniac power trippers it's going to be a while. It's reflected right there in your pay with a social rider that you are only as important as your pay scale.

People here after some time just give up, but they never quit or find another job. Why would they look for inspiration when they could crush yours? It's a place in charge of education and I was astounded by the stunning lack of. 

I don't want to discredit any childcare or teaching jobs those come with their own challenges. Our facilities maintenance department  is an enemy from within.

It’s a stressful place to work, if I’m being honest. Everyone is understaffed and in order to actually do right by the kids you and your coworkers have to constantly work beyond your contracts and means: this means helping to program plan and create resources, working out of ratio with high number of kids, even though you aren’t supposed to be left alone with them as an EA its happened almost everyday for extended periods of time because we just don’t have the staff. This isn’t the board’s fault necessarily as they can’t help their lack of funding. However, in addition, the majority of the staff are Italian. This is absolutely not a bad thing in and of itself, but it lends to an extreme amount of clique-y behaviour as well as outright ignorance. They’ll exclude you by speaking Italian, assume you know things about their culture and scoff if you don’t, and many of them make ignorant comments about other groups (I’ve had to report horrible comments being made about Black and Chinese people numerous times). There are some great people here, but I feel that an overwhelming majority are catty and cliquey, and it’s bizarre behaviour for people who are so well into their careers and ages (I would say the median age of workers here is like 50). There also isn’t any way to really move up unless you go back to university, if you’re an EA you can really only move up to EI and those positions are dwindling and only pay like $1/hr more for an increase of work. You also likely won’t leave the supply roster for years and years and you don’t get benefits until you’re permanent.

I work as an Application Support/ Programmer Data Analyst with the York Catholic District Board. 

My Primary responsibility involves building and maintaining applications using 
Python/VB.NET/ASP.NET/JavaScript/SQL/XML. 
Oracle and SQL servers are our primary databases.
. 
Processing of data is performed as a daily nightly job and fully automated. The Application program extracts, cleans, filters and uploads the data into the Oracle Database System daily.

Management and end user reports are built using Python/.NET, Tableau and Excel. Data Visualization techniques such as Graphs are used for Presentations and for further analysis.

The most enjoyable part of the job is flexibility and good working colleagues. The job could be more challenging though.

Working in the classroom teaching kindergarten students is amazing and fulfilling work. However this is often ruined by admin and colleagues (teachers) who do not believe in, nor support the Full Day Kindergarten program. Many times you are viewed as a helper in the room, not a second educator, and your ideas/suggestions are disregarded.
 
Pros: teaching your students for two years really allows you to foster a relationship with children and their families, great pay and hours enable you to have a good home/work balance, summers off

Cons: respect for the profession is non-existent, no chance for advancement in position or pay, have to apply for EI in the summers, hard to find permanent positions.

Managing workload while dealing with constant interruptions or staff conflicts.

Depends on the school, principal and lead secretary

Every day is different from the next. There is never a shortage of work or challenge to work through. Extremely busy.

There really isnt anything good from my experience. Perhaps the union wage. Nothing else.

The people.  Working with uneducated people creates a hostile environment for those who want to work.

Human resources nor the union do not support or create a welcoming environment for anyone who has been bullied or disrespected.

Overworked, loud atmosphere,  disrespected. Because some administrators were disorganized,  there was a lot of late hours.

I was employed for 39 years. Always worked a 40 hour week. Enjoyed the Benefits.

Dealing with lazy people. Custodians who never do there jobs. Custodians who are always away sick.....

Work as a family. Great friendships. Teamwork. Happy.

6:30 am until 3pm. Open up school. Clean outside garbage. Clean snow. Clean cafeteria.  Clean washrooms.

The collegues in my departments really mad a difference.  I also loved the charity work that took place throughout the year.
