Your Independent Grocer

I worked at this independent for almost a year and my experience was so so. It got me through the pandemic which I’m grateful for, but here’s what I think about working here:
The employees were nice and encouraging, without them I don’t think I would’ve stayed as long as I did. Still I left, all the staff that I worked with has left. There was teamwork and we did very well with organization and staying on top of things, even when it got crazy busy.
The hours were up and down, some weeks I had less than a new employee and sometimes close to 35 hours a week. A frustrating part about the schedule was that it was supposed released every Thursday (at times Fridays) and you would get the schedule from Monday-Saturday. You had to find out two days ahead if you were working the rest of the weekend. I found that frustrating when making plans outside of work. 
My position at this Independent was Salad Bar and It was quite labour demanding. It required tons of preparation and precision so you could end up with a well presented item. Cutting the fruit, weighing it and labeling took a lot of time, with all that work the items get sold very fast which made the job seem unsatisfying at times.
Here on my thoughts on management, to put it in a couple of words, it was something else. They weren’t too encouraging. They would at times tell us the sales we made and it’s great we made progress but I’m not getting a nice bonus at the end of the year, I don’t gain anything from these sales so it’s not too much of an encouragement for me personally. That was mostly the only encouragement we got. We were mostly reminded how the display was empty and how we needed to fill fill fill as quick as possible and we couldn’t have any empty spaces. One shift, it was a pretty busy day. me and my co worker were doing as much as we could as fast as possible. A higher up called our department and asked for me specifically, they call to tell me that the display is empty and needs to be filled. They also asked who was making what and when it was going to be done. I felt very discouraged and like my efforts weren’t being appreciated, if they were in my position, they would see what we had to go through. They would also ask me and my employees very personal questions at times which made us uncomfortable. 
The first reason I left was because they weren’t very cooperative with scheduling for my second job. I was very stressed and anxious and I had to drop one of them. My other reason was because I felt demotivated every time I walked in to work. I felt a bit depressed thinking about what the shift was going to bring.
In conclusion, not every minimum wage job is going the be great, but at this store, my experience wasn’t the greatest. Take my review as you wish and you can decide if you’d like to work here or not.

One of the standout aspects of working at [Grocery Store Name] was the positive and inclusive work environment. The management team was supportive, and there was a strong emphasis on teamwork. During my tenure, I felt valued as an employee, and there were ample opportunities for professional growth and development.

The store's commitment to cleanliness and organization also stood out. The shelves were consistently well-stocked, and the store maintained a high standard of cleanliness. This dedication to a well-maintained environment not only enhanced the shopping experience for customers but also made the work environment more pleasant for employees.

Customer service at isleep was a top priority, and the training provided to employees reflected this. The staff was knowledgeable about products and always willing to assist customers. I appreciated the emphasis on creating a positive shopping experience, and it was evident that the store prioritized customer satisfaction.

However, like any workplace, there were areas where improvement could be made. The scheduling system at notmyproblem occasionally posed challenges, and there were times when the workload felt overwhelming. Improved communication and flexibility in scheduling could contribute to a more balanced and efficient work environment.

In conclusion, blank is a solid choice for both employees and customers. The positive work culture, commitment to cleanliness, and focus on customer service make it a reliable option. With some refinements in scheduling and communication, whocares has the potential to further enhance its overall appeal.

Showing up to work is great. You get to talk to people at your satisfaction, and develop relationships with daily customers. Working here made me learn a lot. I had a lot of responsibilities and duties in which I had to fulfil. It was a little bit nerve racking handling large quantities of cash at once, because if you make one mistake on the till, it could off the count of the till. However, that being said, it was easy to learn how to do everything. The management isn't the greatest. Being part time, you are entitled to the days you book off but you didn't always get them off. That being said, everything else is in pretty good hands. The owner of the store is awesome. He is hilarious. As well as the other employees. Everyone knows everyone and everyone talks to everyone. The hardest part of the job is probably your availability. Sometimes multiple people call in at once, and if you aren't available to take a shift, you may get punished for it in the end. You may get on the front end managers bad side, and hours may be deducted for the following week. However that being said, if you are available all the time to take shifts, and work later than scheduled sometimes, you will probably be praised for it. For example, if you do end up wanting to take a day off here and there, it should not be a problem as long as you let the manager know in advance. The most enjoyable part of the job would have to be the customers. If you were having a bad day, and came into work, and tried your best to leave your bad mood at the door, the customers would often cheer you up, even if they weren't trying. Everyone is so nice and you get to know customers very well. Sometime make friendships with those people. It is the greatest.

During my tenure at this company, I encountered significant challenges related to the management style of the  new OWNER who assumed his position in October of 2023 . The workplace environment was impacted by frequent unprofessional behavior, including raised voices and the use of inappropriate language. These factors contributed to an extremely and stressful and difficult atmosphere.

That said, I had a positive experience working under the department manager, who demonstrated strong leadership, professionalism, and support for the team and was always looking for ways to  help further my career. 

Unfortunately, issues with inconsistent communication,  micromanagement  and a lack of transparency from upper management undermined trust within the department. These challenges culminated in a collective decision by the entire department to resign simultaneously including the Department Manager  in April 2024, highlighting serious concerns about workplace culture.

Based on my experience, I would advise potential employees to carefully consider whether this environment aligns with their expectations for professional growth and respectful leadership.



I worked at the salad bar for a few months before quitting. It was my student job. The people I worked with were, for the most part, very fun to work with, and we had some good times together. However, the managers (or at least, my managers) treat you as if you were a machine that is available to work 24/7. They gave me a ridiculous amount of hours from the moment I started working, when the other employees that had worked there longer than me, had shorter hours than me. And when I told my manager that I wasn't content with those hours, because I had school work and sports activities to tend to, he got mad at me and started telling me that I should be able to always work on the weekday evenings and on the weekends, because it said so on my resumé. What it also said on my resumé, however, was that I'd like about 5 to 16 hours a week. I got 30 hours a week. Also, some of the other people I worked with really got on my nerves with how much of control freaks they were. In conclusion, It's an easy job, and you can make good friends, but don't expect to be treated as a valued employee, especially if you're a student or working part-time.

I thought it would be a good place to work. Then I found out if you work there for 1 month or 10 years, you never get more then minimum wage. Your work duties will increase, they will expect you to complete tasks faster, however, you will never go up in pay.

Management is not qualified for their positions. They have just worked there for a long time, but, have no education or experience for managing. Very frustrating. 

The owner is a bully. If he even catches you talking to a customer for more then a few minutes he will tell you he pays you to stock the shelves not talk to customers. He has made it known to all staff and managers he is not their friend. He reminds you all the time that he has the power to fire you on the spot. 

The co-workers are nice people. They are working hard, need their jobs but nobody is happy there. Therefore, that makes for a very tough work environment. When everyone is walking on egg shells, not getting paid well. In addition, where they should have 5 employees in a department they have 1 and expect you to do the work of all 5. Everyone is exhausted.

Morning shifts are usually better than Night shifts as a cashier, some customers and coworkers are nicer there. Learned that you can't trust every single one of the staffs, especially the management. Management tends to bully and dictate old and new employees, most of them only likes you through favouritism and if you break every single bone in your body to prove that you are a good employee material. The workplace culture is horrid, management doesn't care for you literally you are on your own if you get harrassed by coworkers and/or customers. Hardest part of the job is that you don't get benefits only a 10% employee discount that is only applicable at that place specifically and nowhere else. The only enjoyable part of the job is that what made me over come and perservere the job was the regular customers that are nice and friendly employees who made the job less miserable. It's not worth working at this type of management where you literally have to always watch your back everytime you work. They don't care about you because they'll replace you in a snap, no matter.

training was fun, Management was Awesome, i Loved talking and helping Senior citizens customers, it was interesting to learn about the new fruits/veggies imported from the different cultures needed to accommodate the new refugees/immigrants, the co-workers were helpful high turn around of employees, the owner/hr hire alot of these new immigrants/refugees. my job was a cashier, i scanned groceries, assisted customers,helped seniors count their coins, explained items on receipt or showed customers the coupons to assure them they received all their discounts. asked method of payment, sold bags, asked if bagging assistance was needed, completed transaction,thanked the customer for shopping at Independent grocers. kept till area clean, disinfected. the hardest part of the job was learning the names of imported produce, identifying these items when scanning, communicated with the new Canadians accents, broken English. I loved working with money and talking to my customers, especially the lonely seniors.

A typical day at work depending on which department I was working in would either have me on the run the entire time I was there, or be way more relaxing and go at your own pace. Beauty was more laid back whereas Deli and Salad bar were go go go. I learned to keep my head down where management was concerned because if you caught their attention at all it was usually for something negative, like you weren't moving fast enough, no matter how much you increased your efficiency. Their expectations were exceedingly high for a low income, low reward environment. The hardest part of the job was keeping calm and pressing your lips together when talked down to or yelled at by management when you'd done nothing to warrant such treatment. The most enjoyable part of the job was switching departments to Beauty where I could work alone and get my job done with minimum intrusion. I hope that with the change in store owners that the environment has changed significantly because as it stands it was my worst job experience and I would never go back or recommend working there.

A typical day at work was very similar in some ways as for duties, but you really never knew what to expect though regarding customers.So many different personalities, so many different head spaces..some very rushed and impatient, others passive and understanding no matter what. Most things we could not help and had nothing to do with us but it is our job to fix it or call someone who could..speedily and with a smile.
My management was very understanding if you talked to her and let her know your status. Yet she was a very good teacher and on the ball. Some of the management in training where just that and sometimes we just had to bite our tongue..
The hardest part of the job for me was standing in one spot pretty much even though I only had 4 or 5 hour shifts.. and when we were slow..The most enjoyable part of the job was making the customers day a little happier if possible.
