I think the people working directly with youth are doing amazing things, making a difference, and I was proud to work at YSB. Having said that, some of the office culture at head office could be toxic. Lots of gossip, back biting, and occasional angry outbursts by senior staff during meetings. Other days there was almost nothing to do and it felt a bit like being paid to be a prisoner with no purpose.

Staff were great to work with. They made a stressful job enjoyable. Management was and continues to be terrible. Management makes changes without consulting front line staff or at least getting their opinions. Management is completely out of tune with what actually happens in the facility.

- Worked with fellow students designing low threshold activities for youth and working with Ottawa Public Health nurses encouraging questions and testing amongst youth
- Staying in contact with partner agencies maintaining awareness of current city programs; and participate in select community events

Work was both challenging and rewarding as you could see the positive impact you were having on youth and their families. 
What made the work most challenging was the unhealthy work environment (gossip, bullying, complaining) that was quite pervasive.

The William E. Hay Centre is a tremendously good place to find meaningful employment in correctional services. Working with youth involving in the justice system to help them develop new life skills and goals to assist them in transitioning back into mainstream society.

This organization is well run with a good balance of labour and management input. Working with adolescents and sometimes parents is rewarding! Highly recommended.

They really do not care about their employees and will throw people of color or otherwise marginalized groups under the bus the first chance they get. 

The work culture is horrible. 

I had a great experience with the youth service bureau,I would recommend too any youth who is just starting out in work experience, had an excellent time with all this youth

Not what you think when you apply. Many staff have left, including those who just started, over the toxic environment created by many and fostered over the years

I have never had such a supportive and collaborative team. My prior experiences have always neglected HR input but here it feels valued and impactful. People are humanized and listened to!
