Youth in Policing Initiative

Everyday at work was fun and exciting for me as all the police personnel were fun and engaging. They were all nice and they understood that we're students so they didn't bombard us with a lot of work duty. I learned how to organize a lot of things ranging from files to storage equipment and I also learned more about how the police force operates. My co-workers were great people to work with, they always had some stuff to socialize about and were all hard working. The hardest part of my job was to balance school and work, other than that, there wasn't much. The most enjoyable part was to work alongside with police officers and get in-depth knowledge of how their typical day at work is like.

When I was in high school (grade 10), I got the amazing opportunity to become a YIPI for PRP. It was honestly the best summer ever! I met such amazing people, I learned so much about policing and my community and it really helped propel my career desire to become a police officer. This summer job is for anyone, not just for aspiring police officers, its for all students that have a desire to learn and develop transferable skills that can be useful in adulthood. I am now in my 4th year of university and through that experience, my goal is still to not only become a police officer but work for Peel Regional Police.

on a typical day, we would file hundreds of papers as well as make hundred of photocopies.  my co-workers were Toronto police officers, allowing for me have a unique work setting many don't get to experience.

although the filing and photocopying were straining on me, it allowed me to understand the complexity of marketing.

The program gave us the chance of choosing where we would like to work so I chose the Boys and Girls club. It was a fun experience with the kids, got to make snacks for the kids or one day I would be helping in the gym with sports but in overall the kids were amazing. The staff and volunteers were great as well as they were very welcoming and helpful. I would for sure do this program for the second time and I recomend it to anyone who is interested.

On most days I would organize files and clean up all around the offices but on occasion I would go out with the officers to get an idea of what their jobs were like. The hardest part was definitely rewriting the dates on files that either had no dates on them or had dates that were unable to be read as that took all summer to completely finish but the most enjoyable times were when I went out onto the field with the officers.

A typical day consisted of sitting in a classroom learning about the police force or even coming up with different ways of fundraising for different events. The most enjoyable part was listening to all the guest speakers that came in and we were also able to earn different certificates, including First Aid and CPR, while building our leadership and team work skills.

Children are great and you will love being around them. It is easy to get along with the other counsellors as well. While there is a big responsibility placed on you because you are taking care of children, you will get help if you ask from the other councellors.

Working with Youth in Policing Initiative was a great experience to have as my first job. The management were friendly and easy to communicate with. They were willing to answer questions and wanted you to get involved. It was easy to make friends with the other students within the program and was a summer of growing.

Did not really learn anything. i made packages of pan flits and folded 500 pieces of paper in 2 hours. Officers were nice though i feel like my station was not prepared for the Yipi . only get 6 hours a week headquarter workers are the best the same cant be said for my assigned station

My co-workers were great. Extremely supportive and understanding. We had a great relationship because of how friendly and helpful the were. Overall, they gave me a great experience as a Youth In Policing Initiative student.
