A typical day is opening (or closing) the building in which the centre is located in, turning on the lights, printing off weather reports, and then waiting for people to come in that require your assistance with information. There are also tasks like counting how many visitors have come in, and restocking pamphlets. 

I learned a lot about the surrounding area of my hometown, mostly about trails, hikes, ferries, and so on. There is so much to learn! 

Management is great, they are always eager to hire people who are happy to help tourists. The building is shared with two other companies, and everyone gets along really well. We also share information (tour names, as visitors sometimes come in groups with specific tours). Since it is a government job, the pay is amazing, and the hours aren't too long either. 

The hardest part of the job is not knowing the answer to someone's question. You always work with one other person, and if you've worked for more than one season you are probably well versed in the answers, as the questions are generally the same. Some people dislike the repetitiveness of the job, but I don't mind it.

The most enjoyable part of the job is having time to do your own thing (provided it's not too distracting from the visitors), and helping others figure out what they need. I love being able to speak German or Italian with visitors, who then get very excited and talk to me about interesting things from their countries or their experiences. Sometimes it is not busy at the centre, so I can study the languages or visit other parts of the building and learn what they're doing there. The building itself is very beautiful and big, so it is a wonderful atmosphere to work in. It also has a great view of the mountains.

They pay well. That's about the only good thing I can say.  

There are far too many people in management for the size of the organization, and it's too big overall considering the territory has just 38,000 people. People in management would never be in any position elsewhere as senior as they can get in YG - they would not measure up in a sophisticated organization.  It's laughable how incompetent senior leadership is.

Work processes, technology and policies are stuck in the 1980s (if I'm being generous). People with very little experience get shoved into positions they're not really qualified to do, simply because they're a 'favourite' of someone higher up. Hard-working, capable, competent professionals eventually leave YG because they get fed up with the general incompetence and the lack of recognition of real talent and ability.

Don't work here. The money is not worth it.

I am in the office at 8:00 AM, greet my peers then start my computer. I like to check for any voice mails or emails before I get started. Once these have been checked I deal with them accordingly then start my customized software programs. There is always papers that needs to be scanned, filed and sent to other departments. If the guys are in the field I enter their inspections then send out as required depending on the file. Numerous systems are checked for updates throughout the day. Office is kept clean and supplied with materials as needed. Clients are helped either in person or over the phone in a helpful and courteous manner. Most days during the operating season I am in the office by myself, decisions need to be made. Management is helpful but does not know the workload that is generated from this position, systems are old. There is not a lot of opportunity for advancement but overall, I love my job and the people I work with.

Inmates believe it or not were the more trustworthy people in that building managemt and so called team mates always stabbing each other in the back so many unnecessary investigations causing stress and time off , favouritism displayed at huge level by management , training for new officer was subpar as well as inexperienced incompetent staff making this high risk job even more high risk for workers not a mentally healthy place to work when your teammates are the ones always trying to bring each other down when they should be supporting each other in this environment  . This place is always short staffed because it’s a serious revolving door for workers in the first 6 months of my work there I stopped counting at 30 people who came and went in three years there now it’s well over 100 , unstable work place 

Working at Yukon Government is structured and service-oriented, with a typical day involving collaboration, policy or operational work, and supporting public services. I developed strong skills in communication, stakeholder engagement, and navigating complex systems. The workplace culture is generally collaborative and respectful, with good work-life balance and benefits, although processes can sometimes feel slow due to bureaucracy. Management varies across departments, with some areas offering strong support while others are more hierarchical.  The most challenging part is navigating multiple layers of approval and competing priorities. The most rewarding part is contributing to public service and working with dedicated professionals committed to the Yukon community

The main issue is a high turnover of personnel, including managers. Most employees don't stay longer than 2-3 years, and often - less. Which means newly hired staff often find themselves overwhelmed with work, which they can carry for a couple years, until...

Additionally, the hiring practices for non-full time workers are very unclear. These workers make up about 1/4-1/3 of the entire workforce at YG. If you want to switch to a full-time position and there's even an ad for that - there is no guarantee that you will be considered. 

While the pay is decent, it's important to note that the cost of living in Yukon is high. Although not as high as in Vancouver or Toronto, it is still higher than in most other cities in the country, and don't get me started on the housing.

I was hired because I knew a little bit about Apple and their Education department supplies Apple products to their schools. This was the foot in the door, but the folks at Education trained fairly comprehensively and I learned a lot about remote helpdesk support, Windows support, enterprise-level provisioning of applications and hardware, and many other things that a certification wouldn't teach. Was able to train on the job at times, making for improved quality of work and improved employee experience. Government of Yukon is hard to beat as an employer.

Your experience with the Yukon Government will vary depending which dept. you end up in and who you end up working for. 

I worked in the dept. of education, which was a very good and rewarding experience overall, though had become very challenging toward the end of my time there largely due to philosophical differences with the direction the dept., and government was taking overall.

I worked with many good people and would recommend working for YG given an opportunity as it pays well, provides stability and some assurances. 

Like any other though it does have rough edges but the good tends to outweigh the bad.

Access to working on the latest equipment and diagnostic equipment to support you.
Wide variety of equipment from snow blowers (airport style) to underbody/sander combinations in dump truck to chip sealing and graders, loaders etc….

Keeping equipment working and in good running order, large fleet

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start time 7am-3:30 with overtime opportunities

The most enjoyable part about the job was everything that I did on a day to day basis. My co-workers were absolute gems - so enjoyable to work with and be around and they taught me so much, which I can now extrapolate and use in many different ways (career wise). Typical day at work? Get to the office at 8am, check emails for about an hour, then it's out in the field till about 1-2 (sometimes 3) and then it's report writing. Every day was dynamic and constantly changing so there were no 'typical' days.

THE HARDEST PART about the job. . . was finding a PLACE TO LIVE/RENT. the YUKON is TERRIBLE in that regard.
