iTan Advanced Tanning Studios

I  worked here for a few years and I have to say I have grown as a person and with my skills as an employee. I have made mistakes but they continue to help me improve and succeed. I have seen some of my fellow employees just sit and complain for no reason. I am shocked when I hear stuff like, I can't believe they want me to sell, or clean LIKE REALLY. The management gives quite a bit of freedom but will do their job when needed to help you and the company. The culture, for the most part, is great, they have open lines of communication to upper management. I find it is usually 1 or 2 fellow staff members who ruin it for everyone at a certain location. The great thing is the management will address the drama pretty quickly and address it. I have learned to clean properly, work a computer, troubleshoot situations, improve my people skills, and gain valuable insight from management and especially the owner. Some days are super busy and some days are a bit slower, but always something to do if you are driven. I think if you expect any job to be easy and problem-free then you need to get a reality check. I did find it hard sometimes with customers as a few get out of hand, but for the most part, the customers are amazing. The part of the job I loved was the friendships I made, the work ethic I grew into and appreciate now how the management called it tight. This taught me to respect myself, work harder and grow both personally and professionally. Like I said if you are entitled, never taken care of stuff, and have been babied your whole life don't apply if you have the will to work, and willing to learn, and get valuable experience then apply.

If you’re looking to go back to high school with a bunch of girls that talk smack about you well this is your place to work!!! The entire job is based around your sales because apparently that’s the only way the company can continue to run. Starting there, you would think it will be fun but if you don’t hit your target be prepared to have your position “threatened to termination”. Wow so much motivation, thanks Itan. 

Not only do they pay you minimum wage for many tasks/duties while on shift.. there is no commission. The mark up on their lotions is RIDICULOUS. You’d think with all the profit they’d be able to pay you commission. On top of that,  until just this year they were not giving ANY breaks to employees. Only now has it been enforced as a former employee went to the labour board. It’s pretty awful to make employees work 8 hour shifts straight with no breaks considering the volume of clients coming in to certain locations. 

Lastly, iTan simply has terrible management. In fact, the gossip stems more from management then the employees themselves. They do not treat employees fairly, play favouritism, and are simply one of the worst companies I’ve ever worked for. 

Save yourself the hassle and just get a job somewhere else.

I started at iTAN in 2017 and worked there for about 3 years and it was overall a fun place to work and I believed I learned a lot that has been very valuable to my current career. As a tanning consultant you gained valuable sales training that would be useful for anyone interested in pursuing a career in sales. For those that work hard and demonstrate initiative it was very easy to get recognized and provided an opportunity to become a supervisor at one of their locations. For a small company they do their best at providing as many opportunities as they could for advancement and growth, I am sure they would promote every hard working individual if they could. I believe the pressure of a sanitary spa environment as well as a sale environment can sometimes be too much work for people which leads them to perceive it as a negative experience however, this was a workplace where you developed friendships with co-workers and clients and it made every shift fly by. 

As someone who loves to tan this seemed like a good place to work at. However, it wasn’t. Management is whoever faked their way into a friendship to become a supervisor or whoever was on the same cheerleading team. Very clean studios although managers will not care about anything else until a sale is made and care about hiring cute girls compared to girls with great work ethic. From scrubbing baseboards to cleaning fans, demanding clients, $15 an hour is not worth it. This workplace is full of immature girl posse drama and caddy management who would rather bad mouth each other more than actual work which defeats the purpose and does not make clients or employees feel welcomed. They don’t mind negatively impacting your work environment by threatening to cut your commission if you forget a simple mistake and calling you out for it which explains why they hire all the time. Supervisors are not afraid to cut down your hours since they prefer working with their friends instead of someone who is sales driven. Save your self from this toxic environment because free tanning is not worth it! 

Oh do I have a lot to say about this company. First of all, YOU DO NOT GET BREAKS!!!! You will work 8h+ without being able to go eat or even go to the bathroom. If you work at the quiet locations you will be by yourself for the whole 8h shift. You do so much but yet get paid 14$/hour. They take complete advantage of staff members. There is a lot of favouritism. Girls that have caused so much trouble and are just straight up mean will still work there, even after multiple complaints from other employees. The more sales you make, the more they like you. Communication between HO and employees is non existent. It is very difficult to get a hold of management when you need an answer right away for a client. If you make one single mistake, like forget to switch the laundry they will threaten to write you up. There is so much drama and gossip. It is a toxic work environment. Save yourself the headache and do not apply.

Overall, it is a great job. I was able to learn so much and my work ethic also got way better. We do a lot of cleaning and it can be very exhausting at the end of the day but working with your friends makes it less dull. The friendships that I made are lifetime ones, I am super thankful for that. Obviously there will be 1-2 girls that ruin it, but other than that we're all super close. The downside is that there is basically no commission and management expects so much from you yet our salary's just $14 an hour. We were able to build good relationships with customers but there were also rough ones that made it hard to stay calm. This job isn't as easy as it seems, we actually did a lot and sales play a huge role in a tanning consultant's title. Long story short, if you're lazy and unreliable don't apply. You won't last a month there.

Management is a joke and does not care about your personal well-being, time off is nonexistent even for valid, serious reasons.  Ran by a bunch of 20-year-old girls, and will only hire you if you are pretty. If you have a day off in the week, you will be almost guaranteed to be called in to work in a store across Ottawa, where you never agreed to work. They only care about the sales you make that day and will completely base their opinion of you on that while switching up every new day. A toxic environment with shady employees, supervisors and management who all talk badly about one another. Extremely underappreciated and overworked. And don't expect full-time if that's what you apply for, they don't care if you have bills to pay. 

I am responsible for the cleanliness of the studio and equipment on a daily basis. 2 -3 times a week I am responsible for performing specified deep cleaning duties within the studio to maintain customer satisfaction and good image. I am responsible for educating customers on the importance and benefits of tanning products as well as the safety procedures for tanning and our equipment. I am responsible for selling clients products, memberships ( handle cash as well as interact/credit cards )

I really enjoy my co-workers and management, they are extremely helpful, welcoming and kind. I have learned so much just in the two months I have been employed with them.

I really do not have anything good to say about iTAN other than the free tanning you get. "management" is whatever high school or university student has faked their friendship with upper management. If you're friends with whoever makes the schedule you get nice hours, but if not you work minimal hours and on the worst days. I had trouble paying my rent while working here 5 days a week because my shifts were only 3 hours each when other employees were getting longer shifts. Very caddy and toxic environment, all they care about is sales, cleanliness comes second to selling a package to a client. You would be written up if you failed your sales goals ( even at super slow locations). 

Not much room to advance. GM, CEO and COO push sales and expect all staff to be selling to each client that walks through the doors, while also keeping the salon as clean as a hospital. Need to pay more for the work they ask for. Scrubbing baseboards and using qtips to clean in the fans, while also giving warnings for not hitting sales targets all for minimum wage seems a bit ridiculous to me. "Due to covid" they took away commission structure as well so there is no real motivation or compensation to sell their memberships and products. Their prices just keep going up as well but there's never an increase in pay for the staff
