So let's start with stagnant wages for at least 8 years. Over the course of these 8 years we saw inflation rise 20% over that time. We got zero compensation for inflation and have seen a 20% decline in standard of living. 

The halls management saw the reduction of work from 80% to under 10% of total work, dues increases by 300% over the past 6 months on a 60 hr work week. The membership has been in steep decline while our benefits have been clawed back. 

I'm going back to school to get out of this trade because it's not worth the pay anymore without compensation for inflation the jobs not worth the damage done to one's body

The last 2 years have been extremely feast or famine (almost as much famine as there has been feast). Nobody in the office is doing any favours to the guys, because we can't stay working. The job culture is toxic as can be, as everyone will stab each other in the back on a daily basis, but claim they stick up for their brothers and sisters. When you actually get to work, it's not bad. Just stay away from the gossip. Also, a lot of the GFs and Foremen are total asshats.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Starting at 7 do a toolbox talk after get direction of what the job is and then go from there

Great place to work, depending on where you live there could be travel and time away from home. Great personnel on jobs, management and safety culture is both present and accommodating. Being an oil and gas favoured trade your level of employment and income are susceptible to the ebb and flow of an often times erratic economy, however getting a trade certificate and job specific training is very valuable.

I have been doing this trade for 18 years. I have enjoyed learning and now teaching and helping manage jobs up to the 6 million dollar range. I enjoy the everyday challenge that I get faced with and having to solve daily problems. Dealing with the client and sub contractors. I find that I have great communication skills, but still everyday I have to work on them.

being an insulator you can be in many different situations every day. The people that you work with everyday changes. and the job description is different. I love the mental chalange thet I get and the ability to work at my own pace and be creative

Years of Mismanagement and following the lead of other trades have spelt doom for the future of this hall.

Now instead of actually helping it's members they have become a hiring hall with too many members and not enough work.

Hopefully it will change if it hopes to survive the next 2 years,

typical day... get shown a job and insulate it and clad it with metal.
it was fun doing some of the more difficult patterns.
the hardest part of the job are some of the dirty and hot places that need to be gotten to.
most enjoyable would be the co workers. for the most part.

I have been in the union for about 7 years and I have enjoyed working for them but I would like to get ahead in my position I like learning and want to reach the full potential that I know I can

Challenging job & working conditions, safety conscious  ,need to be fit need good understanding of rules & regulations, working with different people all the time & short term contract work.
