Job Description:

Mount Sinai Hospital is home to one of the largest high risk Women's and Infants Programs in the Province. Over 7,000 women are cared for in our ambulatory and birthing program with expert tertiary NICU care provided in our state of the art, single room, 62 bed NICU. As an integral member of Sinai Health and working in collaboration with the NICU leadership team, the Nurse Clinician is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the orientation and education programs for registered nurses in the NICU. The Nurse Clinician utilizes adult teaching and learning best practices and clinical best practices, influences quality patient care, promotes teamwork, enhances staff development, and participates in retention and recruitment activities. The Nurse Clinician supports the alignment of nursing educational initiatives with departmental and corporate goals and objectives. The Nurse Clinician is supported by the NICU Leadership team which includes the Nursing Unit Administrator, Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Nurse Specialist/NPs, a quality lead as well as a peer NICU Nurse Clinician.

  • Evaluate nursing clinical practice and competencies and provide leadership with the identification of learning needs and the development and delivery of educational programs and personal learning plans, as required
  • Co-lead the orientation program for all new hires and the application of the preceptor/preceptee process
  • Participate in quality improvement activities including the development, implementation and evaluation utilization, and application of:  standards, evidence based bundles of care, policies, procedures, guidelines and standard work
  • Support the establishment of unit goals and objectives that are consistent with the delivery of safe, high quality patient care
  • Take a lead role in creating a culture of safety, risk mitigation, quality, and service at the unit level to improve practices and service delivery
  • Promote high quality and innovative nursing education and orientation using a multitude of modalities, including simulation, on-line, clinical and classroom environments; evaluates and updates/modifies as applicable
  • Contribute to excellence and best practice through the application of research and evidence based practice
  • Provide direct clinical support through 1:1 mentoring
  • Participate in hiring and the performance appraisal process and provide prompt feedback to RNs when indicated
  • Provide support to specific projects as required
  • Collaborate with the NUA and leadership team in creating a positive and professional work environment
  • Encourage and support continuous learning and professional development
  • Contribute to the development of the nursing profession through active involvement and affiliation with other nursing service organizations, professional associations, and the community at large
  • Participate in relevant unit and nursing department committees
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required; Master's Degree in Nursing or related discipline an asset
  • Minimum five (5) years of recent nursing experience in Neonatal ICU Nursing
  • Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may be considered
  • Demonstrated leadership and superior interpersonal, communication and teaching skills
  • Demonstrated experience supporting program development and coordination as well as the application of adult education and professional development principles
  • NRP Certification required
  • NRP Instructor certificate required or willingness to complete within 6 months of hire
  • CNA certification and RNAO Membership an asset
  • Program management and quality experience an asset
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
