Job Description:

As an integral member of the Nursing Professional Practice and Education Team and working in collaboration with the Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialists and WI team,the Nurse Clinician, Perinatal is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the education programs for registered nurses in the Women's and Infants Ambulatory Clinics (8 departments). The Nurse Clinician coordinates orientation and educational programs, based on the best available evidence, for nursing students and staff,and through educational endeavours, influences quality patient care,promotes teamwork, and enhances staff development. The Nurse Clinician uses adult teaching learning theory to facilitate the evaluation of education needs of the nursing staff and in developing and teaching educational programs. The Nurse Clinician supports nursing educational initiatives in alignment with departmental and Mount Sinai goals and objectives The Nurse Clinician will also help to support nursing practice issues and policy/procedure development as needed.

The incumbent will:

  • Develop and maintain standards of nursing practice and management of patient care through the creation of an environment conducive to growth and development of staff, and excellence in nursing practice. Foster the philosophy, goals and standards of the Department of Nursing
  • Collaborate in the establishment of goals and objectives for the Women and Infants' Health Centre of Excellence and/or units consistent with the provision of high quality, safe care. Participate in the programmatic development of inpatient and ambulatory clinical areas
  • Provide leadership in promoting and maintaining a positive work environment
  • Maintain competence in all areas of practice; clearly articulate and define own practice and link to research outcomes
  • Promote high quality and innovative nursing education using a multitude of modalities, including simulation, on-line, clinical and classroom environments
  • Evaluate nursing clinical practice and competencies, identify learning needs and support the development of personal learning plans
  • Use best practices, knowledge translation and program planning principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing education initiatives
  • Participate in quality improvement activities including development, implementation and evaluation of utilization/application of standards, policies and procedures
  • Participate in the development of evaluation strategies to monitor applicable nurse sensitive indicators, and practice changes
  • Encourage and support continuous learning and professional development
  • Participate in teaching of nursing department education initiatives
  • Participate in relevant unit and nursing department committees
  • Contribute to the development of the nursing profession through active involvement and affiliation with other nursing service organizations, professional associations, and the community at large
  • Assist with staff performance appraisals and performance development/goal setting and provide prompt feedback to RNs when indicated
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Job Requirements:

  • Masters degree in nursing (preferred)
  • Current registration with the Ontario College of Nurses, in good standing
  • Recent experience in a Women's Health Ambulatory setting (preferred)
  • Recent experience in an ambulatory setting providing care for pregnant women with fetal complications and maternal complications (preferred)
  • Experience in Maternal and Newborn Care, with a focus on labour and birth in a tertiary setting (preferred)
  • NRP Instructor (preferred)
  • FHSL certificate(preferred)
  • Certification in Perinatal Nursing an asset
  • Expertise in adult teaching learning principles
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively and independently under stressful/challenging conditions
  • Ability to use information technology and support staff in its application, Membership of RNAO and other professional nursing related organizations
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
