The Senior Professional Practice Leader (SPPL), a member of the UHN Collaborative Academic Practice (CAP) portfolio, under the direction of the site Director of Professional Practice (DPP), supports the development, implementation and maintenance of profession specific* and interprofessional practice standards. The SPPL collaborates with other DPPs, SPPLs and Health Professions Practice Leaders (PLs) and Advanced Practice Nurse Educators (APNEs) to ensure that practice standards are aligned and integrated, where possible, across programs, hospitals and organization wide. The position establishes and maintains quality improvement initiatives and works closely with the DPP to promote a vision of practice excellence, integrating practice-based education and point of care research capacity within and across UHN programs, hospitals and in the external community.

The SPPL, partners with the DPP to develop and implement organization-wide healthcare delivery model which advance University Health Network's (UHN)'s foundational value of Patient-Centred Care and its mission of providing exemplary safe patient care and fostering excellence in healthcare delivery, research and teaching. The purpose of this role is to take on delegation responsibilities; performing cross-functional other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested. (*Anesthesia Assistants, Chiropody, Clinical Nutrition, Kinesiology, Medical Imaging Technologist, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Radiation Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Social Work, Speech Language Pathology, Spiritual Care and Therapeutic Recreation)


  • Completion of Master's Degree
  • Nursing Required
  • Current registration with a Regulatory Health Professions College or equivalent
  • Cross appointment with a UHN affiliated College or University preferred
  • A minimum of ten (10) years related clinical experience 
  • A minimum of three years in clinical leadership role 
  • Experience in developing, implementing and maintaining professional practice standards and quality control measures in a health care environment required   
  • Project Management experience preferred
  • Demonstrated skills in managing financial, reporting and budgeting functions preferred
  • Consulting, influencing and negotiating skills
  • Ability to think strategically at the global organizational level, as well as at the program, site, unit and individual levels
  • Broad knowledge of overall hospital structure, operating policies and decision making processes
  • Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act, standards of professional practice and codes of ethics, health care consent and ethical implications of care delivery
  • Knowledge of computer systems and various software applications
  • Broad understanding of the health care system, related issues and trends, policies and legislation provincially, nationally and internationally
  • Excellent knowledge of quality improvement principles and practices
  • Excellent problem recognition, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent judgment and decision making skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse management and employee groups and individuals
  • Ability to adapt to change and to implement and manage change and facilitate its acceptance by others
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in new environments and culturally sensitive situations
  • Ability to meet multiple and competing deadlines
  • Interprets, communicates and disseminates research findings to support patient care and recommends evidence-based policy and practice change
