Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Building Director, a part-time porter will maintain the interior and exterior perimeter appearance and cleanliness of the University Centre and SSMU General Office. This position includes but is not limited to cleaning and sanitation, minor repairs and maintenance as needed, assessing and reporting of issues with plumbing, electrical and other infrastructure-related issues.
Responsibilities
General Maintenance and Handyman Skills:
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks, including plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work.
- Assist in regular building inspections and report any maintenance issues to the Building Manager.
- Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition.
Event Setup and Support:
- Assist in the setup and breakdown of events, including arranging furniture, audio/visual equipment, and decorations.
- Collaborate with event coordinators to ensure all logistical needs are met for successful execution.
- Discusses room set-up and safety measures with appropriate parties for event and room set-ups;
- Stack, lift and rearrange furniture and equipment according to occupant or event need;
- Report any event related issues or incidents in a timely manner to the Building Director and Student Life Operations Director;
- Provide directional information to building users (i.e.. room locations, routes, to rage facilities);
- Maintain cleanliness before, during, and after events.
Safety and Cleanliness:
- Uphold the highest standards of cleanliness throughout the building, including common areas, restrooms, and outdoor spaces. Not limited to but including:
- Clean, wipe sinks, top scrub and repeat if needed;
- Clean and sanitize all toilets, urinals, sinks, and counters;
- Refill all paper and soap dispensers as needed;
- Clean and wipe all mirrors, windows and other reflective surfaces using glass cleaner;
- Spot clean all walls to remove stains, fingerprints and/or other issues that require spot cleaning;
- Empty trash receptacles, recycling and organize waste management materials for pick-up;
- High dust above 60 inches including air ducts, wall lips and door frames;
- Vacuum, dust, spot clean carpets in all areas;
- Dust and vacuum furniture in waiting areas, perform spot cleanings as needed;
- Sweep and damp mop all floors using SSMU supplied disinfectant cleaner;
- Clean and wipe all vending machines, handrails, handles, and doorknobs;
- Ensure that all safety protocols are followed, including proper signage, emergency exits, and equipment usage.
- Conduct regular safety checks and report hazards to management
Customer Service:
- Greet tenants and visitors with a friendly demeanor and provide assistance as needed
- Address any concerns or requests from tenants in a timely and professional manner.
Other Duties
- Assist with inventory management for cleaning and maintenance supplies
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.
- Lock and unlock buildings and rooms according to an established schedule. Ensures that the building is closed using the building closure protocol and that building is vacated at the appropriate time;
- Have knowledge and experience with using equipment such as a smartphone, computer, drill, wrenches, brooms, carpet sweeper, shovel and snow blower;
- Assist our bar and cafe operation with various duties associated to the operation, maintenance and upkeep of a food and beverage operation;
- Adhere to and manage the MSDS guidelines when using various chemicals;
- Maintain and manage MSDS inventory and update necessary documentation;
- Report maintenance issues to the Building Director for submission to McGill Facilities Management;
- Inspects the building daily. Reports unusual activity, behavior, damages, defects, and special cleaning requirements to the Building Director in a timely manner;
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Building Manager.
Work Environment
- This position requires physical stamina and the ability to lift and carry heavy objects;
Qualifications Required
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- 1 year of experience in building services or equivalent is required;
- Ability to push, pull, kneel, stand, bend, lift and reach arms extended over head with or without weight;
- Availability to work 12-15 hours per week, including some evening and weekend availability.
- Manage the movements and/or lift items up to 40 pounds;
- Competency with computer systems, including Microsoft Office, Novell Groupwise and Vibe, Google Suite, and SSMU’s Online Room Booking System;
- Some handyman skills, including basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry knowledge.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment;
- Flexible working hours - open to covering other team members when needed;
- Bilingualism (French and English);
- Some experience in maintenance, janitorial, or related fields.
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed.

Work Conditions
- Start date: June 2026
- Initial contract until end of August with renewal depending on evaluation
- Work Schedule Monday - Thursday, approximately 2-5pm with some weekends as needed
