Position summary
The CHILD-BRIGHT Network is an innovative pan-Canadian network that aims to improve life outcomes for children with brain-based developmental disabilities and their families. We are headquartered at the McGill University Health Centre Research Institute, and work under Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) initiative. www.child-bright.ca

Reporting to the Communications Manager, the CHILD-BRIGHT Writer and Editor will be based in our Montreal office and will help advance our SPOR research work by collecting testimonials and documenting the challenges and benefits of patient engagement in research, via stories and other written communications content, to help illustrate changes to health and/or the health care system, to help engage new community members, and to help highlight the impact of our work.

General Duties
You will play a key role in helping document the impact of patient engagement in our research network by:
  • Planning and carrying out interviews with various network stakeholders (patient-partners, youth, researchers, etc.)
  • Drafting content such as stories, blog posts, newsletter features, etc., to highlight the challenges and benefits of patient engagement in research, and to help us illustrate impact
  • Documenting detailed notes gathered as part of these interviews, for reporting purposes.
You will assume the task of coordinating these stories, from start to finish, including:
  • Pitching story ideas
  • Coordinating the writing, editing, translation and approval process, with all parties involved
  • Validating the quality of the French translations, and making corrections as necessary
  • Collecting photos and signed photo waivers, where required
  • Uploading your stories to the network’s website, to our blog, etc.
  • Drafting social media posts and proposing a visibility plan for each story.
As part of your role, you will help provide tools to other network members to help them draft patient-oriented content of their own, for example:
  • Producing reference documents such as terminology guides, lay language guidelines, etc.
You will also support the Communications Manager on various Communications and administrative tasks, including:
  • Providing general editing and proofreading support, in English and French
  • Helping update network communications collateral
  • Pitching and carrying out communications plans to promote CHILD-BRIGHT’s work and impact during awareness days
  • Updating distribution lists, generating activity reports, updating editorial calendars, etc.

Education / Experience
  • Three (3) years of related experience in the fields of communications, writing, or journalism.
  • University degree in journalism, communications, or in a related field, or an equivalent level of training and experience.
  • Demonstrated skills in interviewing, writing, editing, and proofreading (English is the primary working language, but all materials are produced in both official languages).
  • Ability to translate scientific or complex topics to language understood by the layperson.
  • Strong organizational, planning, multitasking and time-management skills, proven ability to successfully meet deadlines.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Working knowledge of digital communication platforms and tools (Squarespace, Mailchimp, YouTube, etc.) graphic design software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter), an asset.
  • Knowledge and interest in brain-based developmental disabilities, an asset.

Pay Scale: commensurate with qualifications and experience
