The Horticultural Specialist reports to the FM&E Manager and is responsible for the outdoor horticultural care and maintenance of external grounds and parking areas (including snow removal), for a 160 acre site. In addition, the incumbent performs a variety of duties in this in-scope leadership role, while assisting and coaching other Maintenance Workers in the Grounds area at Alberta Hospital Edmonton. The Horticultural Specialist must be able to operate large pieces of equipment such as the Grader, Lift Truck and Bobcat. Please Note: This position is a roaming position and will be required to work at other hospital sites for longer duration within the Edmonton Zone within the Edmonton Zone (including rural). These sites include: Alberta Hospital Edmonton, Sturgeon Community Hospital, Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital, Strathcona Community Hospital / CASA, North East Community Health Centre, Leduc Community Hospital, Devon General Hospital, Westview Health Centre, Henwood Treatment Centre and Food Service Centre. Rotating shifts including weekends.
As a Horticultural Specialist, you will supervise and participate in all aspects of grounds maintenance duties. You will be responsible for the planning, evaluation and implementation of an extensive horticultural program. You will utilize considerable initiative, judgment and knowledge in applying horticultural principles and techniques.

Additional Required Qualifications:
High School education or recognized equivalent along with a 2-year post-secondary program in horticulture, or equivalent experience. Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in grounds / horticulture is required. Must possess knowledge and skills to operate specialty tools and equipment. Must also demonstrate technician problem-solving abilities and be mechanically inclined. Heavy Equipment Operator Certification. Tree Pruning Certification. Pesticide Applicator license is desired (or ability to obtain same). Must have prior experience leading a team in a supervisory position. Must be in good physical condition with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. No physical limitations with regards to sitting, bending, kneeling, crouching, etc. Must be familiar with snow removal and lawn maintenance equipment. Must possess basic computer skills, in addition to good verbal and written communication skills.
