Working in collaboration with a diverse team of trades professionals, t he Fire Technician is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, alteration, repair and small renovation construction of wiring, electrical, components, fixtures, and life safety systems and equipment The Fire Technician will also work on associated life safety and fire suppression systems across all University campuses and buildings , ensuring compliance with applicable codes, legislative requirements and University standards.
Perform duties of a Registered Fire Technician (CFAA) in Ontario, in compliance with codes and regulations as required by your Certificate and the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA), Electrical Safety Code and all applicable fire codes.
Inspect, investigate, repair, replace and solve problems related to the building life safety systems including but not limited to fire alarms, wiring, smoke detectors, head detectors, fire extinguishers and fire hose cabinets in the University and provide technical advice for repairs, in compliance with codes, regulations and standards.
Inspect and investigate and solve problems related to sprinklers, fire pumps, and compressors.
Perform life safety support for maintenance, repair and small renovation projects.
Conduct monthly testing of all emergency systems on campus as required by local regulations.
Investigate and perform shutdown and isolation requests for the fire safety systems.
Coordinate and support shutdowns and isolations for fire safety systems as required for maintenance or projects team.
Coordinate with external contractors, inspectors for compliance, maintenance and testing schedules.
Set-up, inspect and evaluate fire detection, signal devices, control equipment and ancillary equipment and systems to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
Provide technical support by working on low voltage field wiring circuits, the connection of field devices, the microprocessor systems using addressable devices and remote communication.
Provide technical support in evaluating new methods and equipment for improving and upgrading property protection features.
Create and maintain inventory records and appropriate documentation to support inspection and maintenance status of all related fire detection or fire suppression equipment on campus.
Connect and disconnect fire safety equipment as requested through a work order while adhering to required regulations.
Investigate, identify, troubleshoot and isolate faults, accurately documenting findings in written or electronic form and resolve problems.
Organize materials, tools and support staff in the shop and at the job site.
Perform preventative maintenance work and assist with creating these schedules.
Provide input to estimates for hours and materials as required by work order.
Guide consultants, property managers and project managers to University buildings as assigned.
Ensure work areas are left clean, safe and secure upon completion of tasks.
Manages assigned work orders from initiation to completion, documenting all required information in databases and ensuring proper closeout in accordance with departmental procedures.
Provide advice to clients and explain technical terms in non-technical language.
Operate a motor vehicle or golf cart for transportation on campus.
Review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, wiring diagrams and manufacturer’s installation manuals to determine work requirements and the sequence of repairs or installations.
Performs pre- and post-work tasks such as preparing and securing the job site, transporting tools and equipment, and restoring the area upon completion.
Operate within established security and safety regulations, University policies and procedures, and applicable legislation.
Request, order, or pick up required materials from approved suppliers to complete work orders, following procurement practices.
Support the preparation of documentation required for control, audit or reporting purposes and safety inspections. Remain knowledgeable and current with job requirements through participation in courses, instructional seminars and trade shows as required and/or sponsored by the University.
