About the Client: This role supports a male client in his late 60s living at home with his spouse. The client has Alzheimer's and is in a stage where he remains largely aware of his surroundings and his condition — he can hold conversations, recognizes people, and understands what is happening around him, which makes this a particularly nuanced role. His primary support currently comes from his spouse, who is his full-time caregiver, and a companion who visits on Mondays. The family is looking to add consistent, reliable overnight support to give the spouse more breathing room.
The client is physically capable and mobile but requires companionship, engagement, and supervision overnight. He responds particularly well to male company — the family would strongly prefer a male caregiver. He has experienced episodes of significant disorientation during illness (head colds), during which he becomes unstable on his feet and requires close supervision — caregivers should be aware of this pattern, and it can be especially relevant overnight. The spouse is the primary coordinator and is actively building a broader support network around the client.
Responsibilities:
Companionship and engagement — spending meaningful time with the client during overnight hours; engaging in conversation and calming activities as appropriate. Supervision and safety — being a calm, attentive presence overnight and ensuring the client's safety, including monitoring for disorientation or restlessness. Light personal care assistance — helping with tasks such as dressing or overnight routines as needed; patience and a non-intrusive approach are key given the client's awareness of his condition. General support — responding to the client's needs during the overnight visit and communicating any observations to the spouse.
What We're Looking For:
PSW certification or equivalent experience in personal support or companion care. Experience working with clients with Alzheimer's or dementia — particularly clients who retain significant self-awareness. Comfortable and reliable working overnight shifts. Male caregiver strongly preferred — the client benefits greatly from male company and connection. Warm, engaging, and socially intuitive — the ability to have genuine, meaningful conversations is essential. Patient and emotionally intelligent — the client is aware of his decline and this requires a particularly sensitive approach. Reliable and consistent — familiarity and routine are especially important at this stage.
