Under the direction of the Manager and Supervisor, the Lead Hand, Packaging is responsible for assisting the Supervisor on a daily basis, ensures the daily packaging schedule is followed as expected, provides on-site training to Packaging Operators, and monitors their training, performance and provides coaching as required. Responsible for adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) that are in effect assuring the quality and quantity of product produced. The responsibilities of the Packaging Lead Hand include taking into consideration the company’s commitment to our seven Core Values such as Sustainability (people, the planet, and profit) in the planning and implementation of all actions related to the area of responsibility.
Ensure orders are packed accurately and efficiently, and that the product has been filled, labeled and sealed according to company standards
Focus primarily on working with the crew, leading by example, setting the pace, and training
Drive production for assigned line to meet company standards and goals
Tear-down, clean-up, set-up of packaging lines
Ensure all materials (bulk and packaging components) are reset for the next run
Lead and train line workers, including safety training
Schedule lunch and coffee breaks
Liaise with maintenance department for equipment repair and maintenance
Troubleshooting of equipment
Observe closely the working procedure and bring up suggestions for improvement
Coordinate production with Lead Hands on other shifts and ensure proper shift turnover
Request line clearance approval for each run
Assist Supervisor in completing performance reviews, and report any employee performance, attendance or tardiness concerns to the Supervisor
Write and update SOPs for packaging line
Responsible for ensuring staff follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as well as other work procedures and company policies
Observe and enforce all company and department safety policies as outlined in the company policies and training sessions
Oversee the department in the absence of the Supervisor and/or Manager
Other duties as assigned


Excellent organizational and leadership skills
Ability to conduct staff training
Demonstrated experience with good Good Manufacturing Practices
Previous supervisory experience an asset
Packaging experience an asset
Ability to motivate staff in a positive manner
Mechanically inclined and able to troubleshoot equipment
Team player with a positive attitude
Work well within time restraints and able to meet deadlines
Speak and write effectively in English
Respect for authority and company policy
Demonstrated attention to detail
Safety conscious
Physically able to perform all duties
