The Planning & Development Services department is responsible for implementation of planning and development goals, and for establishing and overseeing all planning, development and subdivision processes. The Planning Compliance Officer professionally and efficiently enforces and/or aids in the enforcement and compliance monitoring and administration of the County’s Land Use Bylaw (LUB), Municipal Government Act (MGA), and other statutes and regulations as required. The position conducts investigations and inspections, issues warnings and Orders and reports daily activities to Management, and works with stakeholders to ensure responsible development within the County of Grande Prairie and the lawful and orderly development of land through compliance with the County Land Use Bylaw and the Municipal Government Act

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Extensive experience within a Local Government environment, preferably planning and development department, and a Certificate in Land Use Planning would be an asset.
  • Experience with planning and development enforcement and/or law enforcement, criminal justice, policing sciences or related field would be an asset.
  • Class 5 driver’s license and acceptable driver’s abstract
  • Ability to serve as an ambassador for the County of Grande Prairie and the Planning and Development Services division, providing public education on compliance with the Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Government Act.
  • Strong documentation skills to ensure that required documentation for any enforcement related files are properly served and filled out completely.
  • Familiarity and understanding of the court system, County Policy, municipal bylaws and their application and related provincial statutes.
  • Experience enforcing statutes as appointed and conducting inspections.
  • Ability to act as a resource person for inquiries regarding bylaws and provincial statutes
  • Ability to respond to complaints and calls in priority order and determine appropriate action.
  • Ability to conduct site visits and document evidence
  • Ability to respond to and process a high volume of inquiries related to development and provide technical advice and instructions regarding policy and procedures to customers, stakeholders and colleagues
  • Ability to prepare files and court briefs, as well as give evidence in court as required.
