Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Geotechnical Department Manager

Our company offers services in Municipal/Civil Engineering, Legal Survey, Building Design Engineering, Oil & Gas Surveys and Engineering, Bridge Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Services, Planning and Land & Engagement. We are currently looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Geotechnical Department Manager to join our diverse team in our Calgary location.
Role Summary
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Geotechnical Department Manager will be responsible for the overall supervision, training, and day-to-day management of personnel in the Geotechnical Department. This includes acting as a mentor, monitoring and supporting employee’s professional development, managing the workloads of employees, and overseeing completion of project deliverables.
Additionally, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Geotechnical Department Manager will support the department by actively managing a diverse range of geotechnical projects, including geotechnical investigations, detailed engineering reports, analyses, conceptual and detailed engineering designs, technical specifications, drawings, and construction QA/QC support. The scope of project management duties encompasses, but is not confined to, the following: estimating/pricing, client relationship management and communication, supervision of project deliverables, expert advisory services, and comprehensive oversight of financial aspects encompassing billing and budgetary concerns. This position entails supervising the prompt execution and allocation of all awarded BASE geotechnical engineering projects, ensuring the punctual accomplishment of appropriate tasks and the fulfillment of client deliverables.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor, and train geotechnical personnel
- Manage, schedule, and oversee staff workloads and deliverable management for BASE geotechnical engineering services.
- Project assignment and follow up for the entire geotechnical team to support BASE geotechnical engineering projects and geotechnical project elements.
- Applying senior project management experience and technical skills to support and deliver geotechnical investigations, analyses, conceptual and detailed engineering designs, technical specifications, drawings, reporting and construction QA/QC support.
- Design and conduct geotechnical engineering analyses, including the design of shallow and deep foundations, slope stability modeling, lateral pile analysis and pavement design(s)
- Manage project schedules and budgets and all related client communication as required
- Support the BASE geotechnical Quality Management System and contribute to the design and change of geotechnical engineering elements.
- Manage project schedules and budgets, remain informed and accountable regarding project status, schedule, scope changes, procurement, etc.
- Review project profitability monthly and at completion to ensure estimates are being submitted at competitive, but profitable rates
- Support the Geotechnical team’s skill review and development by leveraging individual skills, and projects to optimize the Geotechnical engineering team development and client services
- Support the performance review and development for all BASE geotechnical professionals and monitor their professional skill development
- Actively support and provide feedback for BASE’s Health and Safety Program as it relates to geotechnical engineering projects and industry standards
- Additional duties as required
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer designation with minimum 10+ years of progressive leadership experience
- 10-15 years’ experience in Geotechnical Engineering, prior experience in consulting engineering is required
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Geological Engineering. A master’s or Ph.D. degree in geotechnical engineering is considered an asset.
- Registered member or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
- Previous experience with site investigations to assess site suitability for development (plant sites, subdivisions, buildings, pavement designs). Experience with PDA testing is considered an asset.
- Valid Class 5 drivers license with no restrictions
- Proficient with current geotechnical software applications
- Advanced desktop computer skills (email, spreadsheets, word processing)

Wage / Salary: $110,000.00 - $160,000.00
