Overview
Under the general direction of the Safer Consumption Site Director and Clinical Team Leaders, the Registered Nursewill utilize their nursing knowledge, skills, and judgment to provide optimal care to patients accessing services. This will include mental health and addiction related assessments, interventions, and treatments. The crisis clinician will practice autonomy and will formulate clinical decisions and development of a patient care plan in collaboration with the multidisciplinary AHWC / SCS team. Drawing from the strengths of this diverse team and from AHWC’s values and mission statement, this role requires a welcoming, kind, and compassionate person for community members who visit the Indigenous-led Safer Consumption Site to access supports during their healing journey. The Registered Nurse should demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the histories, traditions, and cultures of Indigenous peoples, inclusive of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Communities and Nations, including an understanding of the importance of decolonizing healthcare systems and spaces. It is expected that the Nursehave the ability and skills to work with constituents who may be hostile, oppositional and volatile, while at all times maintaining composure and behave in a professional and dignified manner.
Duties
· Welcomes and supports all Indigenous - First Nation, Inuit, and Métis – and non-Indigenous community members entering AHWC / Safer Consumption Site, including people who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and persons who live with disabilities; sees to their immediate comfort
· Nurtures a judgement-free, shame-free environment, focused on harm-reduction and the journey of healing that the individual has defined for themselves
· Emphasizes culturally sensitive, culturally relevant, person-centered care
· Delivers safe and clinical practices in accordance with: AHWC’s program standards, policy and procedural operations, and organizational values; SCS’s program standards; Regional Health and Provincial protocols
· Gives community members hope and encouragement
· Assists in response to emergencies by being familiar with the fire plan, emergency procedures, safety protocols, and location of emergency equipment, etc.
· Responds to emergency codes as per procedures
· Works in collaboration with the director for Safer Consumption Site and reports operational issues as advised
· Attends staff meetings as required
· Meets with supervisor as required
· Adheres to instructions respecting security, use, storage, and destruction of the Personal Health Information (PHI) Act
· Possesses knowledge of social issues such as poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, substance use, mental health/illness, racism, and other challenges faced by Indigenous populations in Winnipeg
· Completes other duties that may be assigned (be a ‘Helper’) when required as part of the Safer Consumption Site team, not exceeding stated skills and capabilities
Experience
- RN/BN 3 or RPN/BRPN 3 required
Working knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR) preferred
- Addiction related training (such as The Core Addictions Practices certificate or equivalent education and training experience in substance use / dependency), an asset
- Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of active registration with the appropriate registering body
- Four years related community experience
- Knowledge of Crisis Intervention Theory
- Effective Crisis Intervention Skills
- Expertise in the area of mental health and addictions
- Knowledge and understanding of psychosocial rehab and recovery
- Knowledge and experience in working with people with substance related concerns
- Proficient at case management
- Excellent Communication and interpersonal skills
- Effective networking and agency relations skills
- Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
- Suicide Assessment and Intervention Training
- Trauma Informed Care Training
- Completion of MICST (Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Safety Training)
