Summary
The Design Manager is responsible for leading and managing the Mechanical Design team while ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality design solutions. Key responsibilities include overseeing the production of fabrication drawings, conducting field measurements, developing Bills of Materials (BOMs), supporting sales and proposal development through concept designs, and providing technical support across Axiom's business units. The successful candidate will ensure departmental deliverables are completed accurately, efficiently, and in alignment with project and production schedules.

Duties & Responsibilities
A) Leadership:
- Aligns design objectives with business goals.
- Develop long-term design protocols and procedures.
- Prioritizes projects and resources effectively with collaboration of the various departments, especially the fabrication group.
- Drives innovation and continuous improvement.
- Recruits, mentors, and develops design talent by providing guidance, teach, assist, and advise employees on practical design practices and standards
- Provides coaching and constructive feedback.
- Builds high-performing, collaborative teams.
- Creates career development opportunities for team members
- Execute Continuous Improvement on systems, standards, and procedures and quality always.
- Develop and maintain resource capacity schedule. (manpower/ hours)
- Represent the company at various meetings and promote the Axiom products and services
- Responsible for Project Management of all design projects

Manage design hardware, software licences, and subscriptions
B) Technical Design Support:
- Review and approve engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation
- Manage the planning, execution, and delivery of Fabrication – Shop ready packages. Design within the best practices of Food Safety parameters
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and company quality requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, operations, quality, supply chain, and sales.
- Provide FAT’s and SAT’s and document requirements
- Analyzes complex design and business challenges.
- Makes timely, data-driven decisions.
- Evaluates risks and develops mitigation plans.
- Resolves conflicts effectively
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on product performance, manufacturability, cost reduction, and reliability.
- Establish project schedules, budgets, and resource requirements.
- Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Support customer requirements and provide technical expertise during project execution.
- Evaluate and implement new technologies, tools, and engineering best practices.
- Manage vendor and supplier technical relationships when required.
C) Budget Management & Profitability:
- Work with suppliers to ensure specifications are correct and at competitive pricing.
- In cooperation with Estimating Manager and Fabrication Manager, monitor labour rates and material costs to learn and adjust for future projects
- Work to specific project budgets and timelines provided by project management
- Analyze financial performance on each project.
D) Administration:
- Ensure all paperwork is accurately completed in a timely manner.
- Responsible for accurately maintaining project files, customer files, job files and quotes.
- Lead and implement PDM initiative
- Maintain and organize SRED files and correspondence when deemed necessary
E) Communication and Team Work:
- Demonstrates self-awareness and self-control that builds trust and credibility
- Understands team dynamics and individual motivations.
- Manages stress and supports employee well-being.
- Lead weekly team meetings to review issues, schedule, workload, budgets, etc.
- Communicate and maintain a cooperative working relationship with all Axiom staff and customers including problem solving and conflict resolution.
- Provide technical assistance and support to all Axiom departments and staff
F) Qualifications
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in mechanical design, manufacturing, industrial equipment for the food & beverage industry
- Minimum 3 years of experience leading, supervising, or managing a design team.
- Bachelor’s Degree or 3 Year Technologists Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Experience with equipment integration and production line layout
- Strong knowledge of fabrication processes, manufacturing methods, shop drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar design platforms.
- Experience conducting field measurements and translating site conditions into accurate design deliverables.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including coordinating multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership abilities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with production, project management, sales, and field operations teams.
- Valid Ontario driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
- Knowledge of applicable Ontario Building Code
- General Knowledge of CSA Z432 Safeguarding of Machinery and similar North American codes
- Familiarity with Structural Design
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field required.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation preferred.

Pay: $115,000.00-$145,000.00 per year
