Medicine Hat College is seeking highly motivated and energetic LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) ESL instructors at our Brooks Campus for CLB Levels 5-8 depending on student placement. This position is best suited for a resident of Brooks. There are three class sections; each are 15 hours per week. Two sections are scheduled in the morning and one section in the evening. The term of this appointment will begin in August 2020 and go to March 31, 2021. In a typical year, this teaching position has time off in July, August, part of December, and February reading week. There is potential for renewal.
Reporting to the Dean, Arts, Education & Business, the primary areas of responsibility for this position are to prepare and teach English as a Second Language courses to adult newcomers including but not limited to curriculum and associated resource writing, design and delivery, as well as delivery of specific workshops that complement the course of study. The LINC program focuses on English language acquisition in the 4 key areas: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing according to the Canadian Language Benchmarks, and includes Essential Skills Training as well. Additionally, the position includes providing settlement information and support regarding life and work in Canada to newcomers.
Bachelor degree in a related field OR a combination of related education and work experience
One year of full time experience in the last two years as an English language instructor, preferably to adults, with Standard 1 recognition from TESL Canada or Canadian equivalent OR Bachelors of TESOL from a 400+ hour course recognized by TESL Canada with a Standard 2 from TESL Canada or Canadian equivalent
Required to successfully complete, within 6 months of being hired, the Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) Training Program provided by LINC and any PBLA training updates during the course of employment
Related experience in a post-secondary environment is preferred
Valid Driver’s License required
Terms of Employment
Hours of Work: 16 hours per week
Wage Rate: $36.00 per hour (inclusive of vacation and stat pay)
