The Truck Driver/Equipment Operator plays a pivotal role in the Public Works Department of the Municipal District of Taber. This position is responsible for the loading, hauling, and spreading of gravel as part of the road graveling program. Reporting to the Manager of Public Works and Infrastructure, the Operator is accountable for implementing changes in graveling methods, equipment maintenance, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of equipment and road maintenance. This temporary position is anticipated to run from June through September 2026.
Key Work Activities
- Assist with road gravelling operations, including the loading, hauling, and spreading of gravel.
- Operate Class 1 truck units and a variety of light and heavy construction equipment to support municipal road maintenance activities.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report equipment defects as required.
- Complete preventative maintenance and basic servicing of equipment, including gravel trucks, loaders, and trailers.
- Assist with truck and trailer inspections in collaboration with the mechanic.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and in accordance with municipal policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Work closely with the Public Works and Construction Supervisor to support gravel crew operations and infrastructure projects.
- Maintain records related to equipment operation, inspections, and assigned duties.
- Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and ongoing operational improvements.
- Assist with short-term and long-term planning initiatives related to municipal infrastructure and Public Works operations.
- Collaborate with other Public Works employees to support departmental goals and project completion.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support municipal operations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Class 1 Driver's Licence with Air Brake Endorsement.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience operating Class 1 vehicles.
- Experience operating and maintaining light and heavy construction equipment.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence considered an asset.
- Basic computer and technology skills.
