The Research Technician will have the following key responsibilities within this position: (1) interface with the ICU bedside nursing staff to obtain consent from patients or their substitute decision maker, communicate with substitute decision maker at bedside or remotely by phone and/or email, and obtain informed consent, and (2) oversee bedside sample kit drop off, sample transport from ICU to Robarts Research Institute, sample processing, labelling, storage, cataloguing and maintenance of the Early Severe illness TrAnslational BioLogy Informatics in Humans (ESTABLISH) biorepository. Sample processing will include the separation of whole blood into its constituents (plasma, buffy coat, peripheral blood mononuclear cells) and meticulous oversight of the biological repository in the C3RP laboratory at the Robarts Research Institute. (3) maintain the day-to-day activities related to the ESTABLISH biorepository. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with undergraduate and graduate student training, maintaining a safe work environment, participating in monthly research meetings and weekly lab meetings, and summarizing data.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine or in a related field
Experience:
- 1 year of work experience supporting research in a related technical field
