LEAD ENGINEER - Mechanical
Mainstay provides owner's representatives to help mining companies in Canada manage their capital construction projects. Our multidisciplinary teams of qualified professionals have successfully overseen billions of dollars worth of projects in mining. Mainstay engineers are responsible for establishing, coordinating, and monitoring all aspects of the engineering effort to undertake and complete the technical engineering design in accordance with the project scope documents.
The Mechanical Lead will have the ability and experience to motivate and drive employees to achieve Mainstay’s business goals and objectives. The Mechanical Lead will drive business development, lead with integrity, and demonstrate effective and efficient organizational skills. Leads will actively manage projects and support Project Managers within their department. Providing approvals, technical oversight and mentoring on proposals and engineering deliverables.
Responsibilities:
- Managing project delivery, client satisfaction and client retention.
- Exploring business development opportunities and securing new clients and work for department
- Facilitating coordination of multi-disciplinary work and inter-departmental activities
- Tracking department key metrics and managing staff efficiency including workload distribution and chargeability
- Monthly forecasting of work and tracking of project status within the department including budgets, schedules, invoicing, closeout and account receivables, followed by quarterly reporting to Senior Management
- Working with senior management on adjustment of staffing levels according to business needs
- Working with senior management in employee recruitment, promotion, retention, succession planning, corporate culture, staff career streaming, conflict resolution
- Building a positive working environment and proactively addressing concerns raised by employees
- Ensuring employees have access to tools, training and support that helps them develop and achieve success in their positions
- Working with the Quality Management team to uphold quality standards and procedures
- Working with the Health and Safety Management team to reinforce safety as top priority, compliance to local legislated and best practice safety needs and ensure required safety training and equipment is available to all staff
- Conducting annual employee reviews and recommendations on salary adjustments
- Facilitating team building activities and professional development of staff
- Serve as the mechanical discipline lead on a mining project; plan, manage, and coordinate the mechanical engineering activities on large and/or technically complex projects and/or serve in an individual contributor role as the mechanical expert completing broadly defined and/or technically complex engineering assignments
- Lead a project team of mechanical engineers and designers including coordination of design work and technical input and coordination across project wide, multi-discipline design to ensure cost effective, efficient, safe, and timely completion
- Coordinate and oversee the development of resource planning, scope, schedule, and budget for the project discipline team
- Assure that all work on assigned projects is timely, accurate, and of high technical quality performed to organizational standards, codes, and general
- Develop, plan, evaluate, and recommend solutions for difficult problems
- Develop and implement improved designs, work methods, practices, and procedures
- Work with and communicate with project management team
- Provide regular progress reporting regarding the discipline project progress and performance with respect to scope, schedule, and budget
- Serve as an advisor and mentor to other technical personnel on design, processes, engineering methods, and interpretation of codes and standards
- Promote, and adhere to, the discipline specific procedures and feedback on continuous improvement
- Perform the role as a Technical Authority, when appointed.
Skills / Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- Ability to register as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Saskatchewan (APEGS).
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in engineering and leadership roles.
- Must possess strong team management and organizational skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without Mainstay sponsorship at time of application.
