Position Overview
The DOC Communications Summer Student will play a key supporting role in communicating Doors of Compassion’s mission to provide emergency shelter, a foodbank, and a community hub in Durham Region. The student will assist in disseminating stories of impact, promoting events and services, and building engagement through digital and grassroots channels, helping transform lives and strengthen community connections for those experiencing homelessness, poverty, or food insecurity.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, edit, and schedule content for social media and newsletters showcasing shelter, foodbank, and hub activities.
- Assist in preparing press releases and impactful narratives centring client voices and organizational updates.
- Document and share stories from shelter and food bank operations, respecting dignity and privacy.
- Support promotional efforts for local drives, community events, and giving campaigns.
- Compile communications reports tracking reach and engagement metrics for shelter, hub, and foodbank programs.
- Collaborate with direct service staff to ensure messaging reflects a trauma-informed, person-centred approach.
- Perform basic graphic design and web updates relating to program outreach and supporter recognition.
- Help with administrative duties for communications projects.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in a post-secondary program in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
- Commitment to nonprofit values of respect, dignity, and inclusion.
- Experience or interest in addressing homelessness, food insecurity, and community development.
- Strong writing, interviewing, and digital media skills; familiarity with design/content management software is an asset.
- Detail-oriented, creative, comfortable managing tight deadlines and confidential information.
Learning OutcomesThe student will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, deepen their understanding of social issues, and contribute to the ongoing impact of shelter and food security services in the Durham region.
Note: This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and is open to approved individuals aged 15 to 30.
Pay: $18.60 per hour
