You Know How to Build It. Now Help Lead It.
You’ve spent enough time on landscape construction sites to know the difference between work that’s done and work that’s done properly.
You understand grades. You can run equipment. You know how to set heights, make clean cuts, solve problems in the field and keep a project moving.
Now you’re looking for a role where you can do more than just complete the task in front of you.
We’re looking for experienced Lead Hands who want to help run the job.
DPR Landscapes is a custom landscape design and build company based in Whitby, Ontario. We build high-quality outdoor spaces throughout Durham Region, including interlock, retaining walls, decks, masonry, outdoor structures and complete landscape transformations.
As we continue to grow, we’re looking for an experienced Landscape Construction Lead Hands to become key members of our construction team.
This Isn’t an Entry-Level Position
We’re looking for someone who already understands the realities of landscape construction.
You should be comfortable walking onto a job site, understanding what needs to happen next and helping a crew get it done properly.
You’ll work closely with the Foreman, but you’ll also be expected to take ownership.
That means keeping people productive, catching problems before they become bigger problems, maintaining quality and stepping up when leadership is needed.
What Matters Most at DPR
Technical ability matters.
But we’ve learned that the best person on a crew isn’t always the person who knows the most.
It’s the person who:
- Shows up ready to work
- Keeps a positive attitude when the day gets difficult
- Takes ownership instead of waiting to be told
- Helps the crew around them succeed
- Solves problems instead of creating them
- Takes pride in the finished product
- Wants to keep getting better
Skill gets you in the door. Attitude, leadership and work ethic determine how far you can go here.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
As a Lead Hand, you’ll work alongside the Foreman to turn project plans into finished outdoor spaces.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting the Foreman with day-to-day project execution
- Leading and coordinating a small crew when required
- Delegating tasks and keeping work moving efficiently
- Maintaining job site organization, productivity and safety
- Reading and following computer-generated construction drawings
- Establishing grades, elevations, wall heights and step heights
- Identifying and solving construction issues as they come up
- Operating machinery and equipment safely
- Monitoring workmanship throughout each stage of construction
- Communicating clearly with the Foreman and crew
- Helping ensure finished projects meet DPR's standards
You won’t just be responsible for your own work.
You’ll help set the standard for the people working beside you.
The Skills We’re Looking For
You should have strong hands-on experience in hardscape and landscape construction and be comfortable working with modern installation methods, materials and equipment.
Hardscape Construction
Experience should include many of the following:
- Excavation and site preparation

Hardscape Materials & Systems
You should be familiar with materials such as:
- Woven and non-woven geotextiles
- Biaxial and triaxial geogrids
- Polymeric jointing sands
- Resin-based jointing products
- Modern hardscape base and drainage systems
Equipment
Experience operating equipment such as:
- Excavators
- Loaders
- Skid steers or compact equipment
- Concrete and masonry saws
- Construction power tools
- Trucks and trailers
What We Need From You
Applicants should have:
- A valid G driver's licence
- Strong hardscape construction experience
- The ability to read and interpret project drawings
- Strong understanding of grading and elevations
- Good organization and communication skills
- The ability to lead and motivate a small crew
- The ability to work independently when required
- A professional approach around clients and their properties
- Reliability and punctuality
And above everything else:
A positive attitude. A strong work ethic. Initiative. Accountability. And a team-first mentality.
What You Can Build Here
We’re not hiring Lead Hands because we need someone to simply fill a position.
We’re building a stronger team.
For the right person, this role is an opportunity to take on more responsibility, strengthen your leadership skills and continue progressing within a growing landscape construction company.
If you demonstrate that you can lead people, solve problems, protect quality and help projects run efficiently, there is room to grow.
Compensation & Benefits
$25–$35 per hour, based on experience, technical ability and leadership capability.
We also offer:
- Full-time employment
- Year-round work
- Performance-based bonuses tied to project efficiency and deadlines
- Opportunities for increased compensation based on performance and responsibility
- Health, dental and vision benefits after one year of employment
- Opportunities for advancement as the company grows
- Hands-on involvement in custom, high-end landscape projects
The Person We Want
We’re looking for someone who can look at a set of plans, look at the site and start thinking three steps ahead.
Someone who notices when something isn't right.
Someone the crew can rely on.
Someone who cares whether the final cut is clean, the grade is right and the project looks as good up close as it does from the road.
And someone who understands that being a leader doesn't mean standing back and giving orders.
It means setting the pace.
Ready for More Responsibility?
If you’re an experienced hardscaper who takes pride in your work and you're ready to become a bigger part of the projects you build, we want to hear from you.
Apply through Indeed or contact us directly and tell us about your experience, the types of projects you've worked on and what you're looking for in your next role.
