Summary of Duties:
The Cultural Safety Officer supports respectful, culturally grounded practices across project sites, ensuring that work is carried out in alignment with Lil’wat values.
This role is functions on a split-shift, structured around key points in the workday. The Cultural Safety Officer transports workers to and from site, supports start- and end-of-day coordination, participates in tailgate meetings, and provides guidance when issues arise. The focus is on early intervention, clear expectations, and practical, on-the-ground support.
The role also includes delivery of cultural awareness sessions, co-developed with Cultural Advisors and/or Elders, to support shared understanding across Lil’wat and non-Lil’wat teams.
Key Deliverables and Expectations:
- Transport workers safely to and from job sites, maintaining a consistent and respectful environment
- Set the tone for the workday during morning transport and arrival, reinforcing expectations and readiness for work
- Support end-of-day return, helping close out the day in a calm and consistent way and identifying any emerging concerns
- Attend start-of-day meetings and tailgates, addressing concerns early and reinforcing site expectations
- Act as a visible and accessible point of contact for workers at the beginning and end of each shift
- Identify and respond to cultural safety concerns as they arise during the workday
- Provide clear, practical guidance to workers and supervisors when redirection is required
- Initiate pause or escalation of work under defined cultural safety conditions
- Support workers through informal check-ins and early identification of issues affecting attendance, readiness, or conduct
- Connect workers to appropriate supports where needed
- Reinforce expectations with non-Lil’wat workers and contractors through day-to-day interaction on site
- Address misunderstandings early to support respectful and effective working relationships across crews
- Plan, co-develop, and deliver cultural awareness sessions in collaboration with Cultural Advisors and/or Elders
- Support practical application of cultural teachings through daily site interactions
- Maintain a presence on site during key periods without continuous monitoring or supervision
- Work alongside Cultural Advisors or Elders to align site practices with cultural protocols where required
- Track incidents, observations, and actions taken to support reporting and continuous improvement
- Identify patterns or recurring issues and escalate to leadership
- Perform other related duties as requested
Experience and Attributes:
- Connection to Lil’wat community, values, and ways of working (preferred or supported)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to assert positions when needed
- Able to build trust through consistent, direct, day-to-day interaction
- Comfortable facilitating small-group discussions or education sessions with support
- Ability to remain calm and steady in tense or challenging situations
- Sound judgment and ability to recognize when intervention or escalation is required
- Comfortable working in construction or active outdoor environments
- Reliable and able to maintain consistency across split shifts
- Eligibility to obtain a Class 4 license required; Class 4 an asset
- Physically able to meet the demands of driving and site-based work
- Willingness to learn and develop in the role with mentorship and guidance
