This course focuses on the design of teaching and learning for faith formation and religious education in Catholic elementary schools in Ontario. Teacher candidates will learn about the design of professional lessons, effective pedagogies and contemporary foundations of religious education, catechism, family life and the Ontario Catholic Curriculum. Candidates will discern leading practices for teaching in Catholic elementary schools to integrate faith and reason among students. (.5 credit)

The Faculty of Education is seeking a Limited Duties Instructor to deliver the course Teaching in Roman Catholic Elementary Schools to teacher candidates enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program.
This course explores the principles and practices of designing teaching and learning for faith formation and religious education in Ontario Catholic elementary schools. Topics include effective pedagogy, curriculum design, sacramental preparation, catechism, family life education, and integration of Catholic worldview across the curriculum. Teacher candidates will examine the Ontario Catholic Elementary Curriculum and associated Ministry and Institute for Catholic Education (ICE) documents. The course emphasizes spiritual formation and ethical teaching through a Catholic lens, incorporating frameworks such as Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ, Catholic graduate expectations, and contemporary issues in Catholic education.
Through synchronous Online instruction, the successful applicant will support teacher candidates in developing strategies for integrating faith and reason, nurturing student spirituality, and designing inclusive, developmentally appropriate learning experiences grounded in Catholic values.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver the course content and learning experiences in alignment with Catholic curriculum expectations and the course outline.
- Guide teacher candidates in developing lesson plans and faith-informed pedagogy rooted in the Ontario Catholic Curriculum.
- Introduce and support the use of relevant curriculum documents such as Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ, Family Life Education, and Religious Education Policy for Ontario Catholic Schools.
- Foster a spiritually supportive and inclusive Online learning environment.
- Engage candidates in professional dialogue about Catholic faith integration, sacramental life, liturgical education, and moral formation.
- Assess candidate learning using appropriate evaluation strategies that reflect Catholic educational values.
- Provide timely feedback and facilitate reflective practice and faith-based discussions.
