Position Description
We are looking for a Structural Steel Detailer / Estimator at ArkTon Steel. We are a Canadian owned and operated company located in Crossfield, Alberta specializing in pre-engineered and conventional building systems as well as primary & secondary component manufacturing. The Detailer / Estimator's responsibility includes detailing and estimating for conventional and pre-engineered for commercial and institutional building construction projects located throughout Alberta and Western Canada. Responsibilities include structural detailing, client interface and ensuring client satisfaction; developing detailed means and method estimates; outsourcing, analyzing and competitively purchasing subcontractor services and material purchases; reviewing proposed designs for constructability, value-engineering, assist in contract negotiations; creating, updating and enforcing project schedules; problem solving; coordinating project meetings; keeping project records and documents; managing project cost; managing change orders, acquiring building permits, managing submittals and other necessary project documents and physically inspecting projects to monitor progress and compliance with project standards.
Drafting Responsibilities Include:
- Create 3D Model Designs based on project requirements.
- Review and analyze drawings and sketches to determine appropriate connections and input into correlating system.
- Prepare clear, thorough, and accurate assembly and erection drawings indicating dimensions, tolerances, fastening and joining requirements.
- Interrelate and operate effectively with coworkers and other associates within a friendly, yet demanding, work environment.
- Manage multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a complex environment with various priorities.
- Collaborate with Ownership, Project Managers and Detailers assigned to various divisions of the project to ensure specific details are managed accordingly to help avoid conflict and inaccuracies within the fabrication and erection stages.
- Project correspondence and maintenance.
- Act as the Detailing Team Lead when required.
- Respond to any change requests from the client.
- Work with the Project Manager and production team in troubleshooting any client issues.
- Assist with any challenges or questions in the fabrication and erection stages.
- Attend project meetings with engineers, architects and general contractors when required.
- Review contract drawings and specifications to identify any unusual or unique aspects.
- Work with Project Managers and Detailing Managers to best maintain project schedules using the allotted resources.
- Inform Project Managers of changes that may result in extra scope, extra costs, or extra time required for the project.
- Review drawings to identify any detailing that does not adhere to company or project standards and communicate to other Detailers working on the project.
Estimating Responsibilities Include:
- Read and interpret bid tenders and analysis of project award success.
- Read and interpret blueprint and 3D modeling.
- Familiarization of the tender process interpret contract specifications.
- Familiarization with Provincial & National Building Codes.
- Understanding estimating process and processing bid take-offs.
- Formulate clear & concise estimates for senior management review.
- Organizing comprehensible bid quotes for client review.
Additional Responsibilities
- Meet with Owners and Design Professionals on a regular basis to discuss status of projects, determine client satisfaction.
- Address all client issues and/or concerns with urgency and ensure that immediate action is taken.
- Visit project work sites, clarify scope of work, and prepare cost estimates and proposals
- Evaluate projects for constructability and value-engineer cost savings
- Establish, monitor, communicate and maintain project schedules utilizing contemporary scheduling software
- Develop and implement strategies to self-perform and to outsource the various aspects of a project to achieve the projects objectives of price, schedule and quality
- Negotiate contracts, subcontracts and purchase orders to assure that all project goals are being addressed
- Proactively identify issues that could lead to problems and facilitate their solutions
- Conduct and document project progress meetings
- Determine and implement the appropriate level of project control (i.e.: submittal logs, change order logs, etc.)
- Manage project costs to assure that budgets are maintained. Document and manage changes in the work to secure the interests of the entire project team
- Document substantial completion: manage the project closeout process to assure timely completion
- Participate in weekly staff meetings and industry networking functions.
- Facilitate regular fabrication shop visits.
Construction Skills
- Understands means and methods of construction associated with the structural steel construction and commercial buildings typical throughout Western Canada
- Has a working knowledge of civil, architectural, mechanical and electrical work.
- Has a working knowledge of the cost of goods and services; has a demonstrated ability to solicit, evaluate and manage the price, schedule, and quality objectives of individual projects
- Can create a 3D visualization of the end product & knows how to get there
- Understands the sequencing of work and the strategy of creating effective project schedules
- Understands project cost control and change order management
- Understands contemporary software applications associated with managing and controlling workflow.
