Torus Talent is working with a large mining client on an active mining project in the BC Interior. We are seeking an experienced HSE Area Lead to support night shift construction activities within a live operating mine environment. This role is site based and on a 14/7 rotation.
This role will be responsible for providing field-based health, safety, and environmental leadership across brownfield construction work fronts. The successful candidate will work closely with site operations, maintenance teams, construction contractors, and project leadership to help ensure work is planned, permitted, and executed safely.
The HSE Area Lead will play a key role in supporting safe work execution, reviewing permit-to-work activities, identifying high-risk tasks, monitoring contractor safety performance, and ensuring alignment with site procedures, regulatory requirements, and project expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide visible, field-based HSE leadership across assigned construction areas during night shift activities
- Support the safe execution of brownfield construction work in an active operating environment
- Review permits, isolations, and control-of-work requirements to confirm work is being planned and completed safely
- Participate in shift handovers to ensure clear communication of work status, risks, and outstanding safety items
- Work with supervisors and contractor teams to identify critical tasks and higher-risk activities before execution
- Take part in permit-to-work planning discussions and provide input on controls, sequencing, and work readiness
- Complete field inspections, safety observations, FLHA reviews, and compliance checks
- Monitor contractor adherence to site safety expectations, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Support risk assessments, job safety reviews, and hazard identification processes
- Assist with incident reporting, preliminary investigations, and follow-up actions as required
- Coordinate with operations HSE teams to ensure consistency between construction activities and broader site safety practices
- Maintain accurate records related to inspections, observations, permits, incidents, and other HSE activities
- Provide coaching, guidance, and mentorship to permit technicians, junior HSE personnel, and field teams
- Help reinforce a strong safety culture across contractors, operations, and project stakeholders
Qualifications and Experience
- 5 to 10 years of health and safety experience in mining, oil and gas, heavy industrial construction, or a similar environment
- Previous experience supporting large industrial construction projects, preferably in British Columbia
- Strong background working in brownfield, live operating, or high-risk industrial environments
- Practical experience with permit-to-work systems, isolations, and control-of-work processes
- Hands-on exposure to heavy construction activities such as structural steel, concrete, civil works, mechanical installation, or similar scopes
- Experience working directly with contractors, supervisors, operations teams, and multidisciplinary project stakeholders
- Solid understanding of provincial and federal safety legislation and regulatory requirements
- Familiarity with BC Ministry requirements and applicable workplace safety standards is considered an asset
- Ability to review work plans, assess risk, and ensure appropriate safety controls are in place
- Strong field communication skills, with the ability to lead, coach, and influence crews in a site-based environment
- Previous experience on rotational, remote, or camp-based projects is preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety reporting systems
- Valid driver’s license required
