Job Summary
The Mechanical Assembler/Fitter is responsible for all assembly activities pertaining to equipment and tooling.
Ensures assembly is completed within strict time frames in order to meet shipping deadlines.
Job Duties
- Assemble a variety of machinery and equipment by reading blueprints, bills of material and traveler.
- Operate hand tools and portable powered hand tools.
- Troubleshoot mechanical problems on mechanical sub-assemblies and main machine assembly by using problem solving techniques.
- Operate a forklift and/or crane to move heavy objects.
- Use measuring tools to meet very precise tolerances.
- Provide updates to engineering department so drawings can be changed to reflect changes made during the assembly process.
- Inform supervisor or engineering dept. if something does not look right or it does not make sense.
- Inspect and test assemblies for conformance to specifications on assembly drawings.
- Use knowledge of company products and manufacturing processes to assemble quality products as per assembly drawings requirement with no rework required.
- Ensure efficient use of time and workflow by planning work and keeping work area organized and clean.
- Keep daily agenda with accurate and organized things to do.
- Achieve daily target set by supervisor for finished assembly process.
- Meet M9 milestone dates.
- Collaborate with supervisor and co-workers to ensure an on-time, quality product.
- Exchange information and knowledge on issues encountered.
- Communicate safety and production issues to supervisor.
- Maintain positive and productive working relationships with supervisor, other shop workers, and engineering staff.
- Be courteous and helpful when dealing with customers, suppliers and with co-workers.
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and policies as outlined in the Company Health and Safety manual to prevent workplace injuries including using personal protective equipment, using protective devises on equipment, performing all pre-use inspections as required, follow lockout procedures, and report all injuries.
- Follow all plant safety rules.
- Follow all company rules and regulations as outlined in the employee handbook.
- Complete daily Labour Sheet ensuring accurate allocation of time spent.
Job Requirements (Education, Knowledge & Skill)
- High school with some post-secondary technical training in a skilled trade.
- Certificate of qualification for millwright, machinist or tool and die or equivalent experience.
- Forklift and Crane certification.
- 5 years’ work experience in new custom machine building.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Ability to use precision measuring equipment to determine mechanical fits and limits.
- Ability to safely operate cranes and forklifts.
- Ability to produce quality assembly within tight timeframes and meet deadlines.
- Troubleshooting skills to solve mechanical assembly issues and to provide on-site service.
- Good communication skills to gain and provide understanding of issues.
Work Conditions & Physical Demands
- Normal for an industrial heavy metal manufacturing environment.
- Works with heavy parts, near moving mechanical parts, and material handling equipment.
- Environment can be noisy and there is a risk of injury while machine is being tested.
- Hot environment during summer season.
- Ability to stand and walk for most of the day.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
Other:
- Ability to travel to customer sites for installation and service as required.
- Ability to work occasional weekend and/or evening as necessary in order to meet quality and due dates.
