Job Overview
We are seeking a reliable, organized, and detail-oriented Contract Bookkeeper to support the financial operations of our congregation. This part-time contract position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records ,processing payroll updates, preparing financial reports, and supporting the Treasurer in ensuring the church's financial affairs are managed efficiently and confidentially.
This role also provides occasional backup support to the Office Administrator and offers the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain all financial records for the congregation.
- Post and reconcile weekly offerings, PAR (Pre-Authorized Remittance) contributions, bank statements, and payroll.
- Prepare annual charitable contribution receipts for Treasurer approval.
- Issue rental invoices in accordance with approved rental agreements and monitor collections.
- Record all income and accounts payable transactions.
- Prepare weekly cheque runs and coordinate approvals with signing officers.
- Process payroll changes under the direction of the Treasurer, including:
- Communicating payroll changes to ADP.
- Processing payroll adjustments, including retroactive pay.
- Updating payroll information in PowerChurch.
- Complete banking duties, including deposits as required.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations.
- Manage cash transactions and maintain accurate records within PowerChurch.
- Prepare monthly financial statements for review with the Treasurer.
- Prepare and submit statutory remittances (HST and payroll-related government remittances).
- Provide backup support to the Office Administrator as needed.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience in bookkeeping or accounting.
- Strong knowledge of bookkeeping principles and financial recordkeeping.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Sound judgment, professionalism, and a high level of confidentiality.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Experience using PowerChurch or similar accounting software is considered an asset.
- Experience with ADP payroll is an asset.
Reporting Relationship
The Bookkeeper is accountable to the Ministry & Personnel (M&P) Team for job performance and works closely with the Treasurer.
